Kindest Way to Treat a Broody Hen

Yes, that’s what I did. In the end, I only had to move her a couple of times on the first day, and once on the second and third days, and she was then back to scratching around with the rest of the gang as usual. No cages required, so all good.

Kindest Way to Treat a Broody Hen

I’m doing anything short term, that’s a ridiculous thing to suggest. However, they are part of the family, and I treat them as such. They’re not just egg producing machines.

Kindest Way to Treat a Broody Hen

I lifted her out this morning, without too much drama. She sat motionless on the ground for a few minutes, then got up and went for some food. She's now joined the others in the garden. She's normally quite placid, so hopefully this method will work for her. I'll keep the coop closed for a...

Kindest Way to Treat a Broody Hen

Thanks for the suggestions. I’m not keen on the wire cage method. She’s never been confined in any way, and I’m concerned that will be stressful for her, so that would be a last resort. I’m not worried about spending time on a solution, so I’ll lift her from the nesting box as necessary...

Kindest Way to Treat a Broody Hen

So it’s the middle of Winter here, and she’s only about 9 months old, but Betty has decided she’s broody. She’s sitting firmly on those eggs, just staring back at me, and refusing to move an inch. This is my first time with a broody hen, so I’m trying to work out what to do. I have no roosters...

    Male or Female?

They seem to be settling in quite nicely, and they’re getting on well with Gladys and Hilda!

    Male or Female?

I have one elderly standard and one adult bantam (but they're also both a different breed to these two). These two are currently about the same size as my adult bantam. Personally, I suspect they're silver laced Wyandottes, and that they'll grow to be standard size. The seller had a lot of...

    Male or Female?

Thanks! I'm not really sure if they're standard or bantams! The seller said they were (probably) crossed with bantams. I'm reasonably new to chickens, but they look fairly big to me, especially if they are a lot younger than he thought. He had chickens running everywhere around his semi-rural...

    Male or Female?

Thanks for the quick replies! I'm also thinking they're younger than 6 months, although the seller thought they were about that age and should be starting to lay any day now. He says they are silver laced Wyandottes, possibly crossed with some Partridge Wyandotte bantams (although I don't...

    Male or Female?

Hi all, I've been keeping a few chickens here in New Zealand for about a year now, but still have a lot to learn! Would anyone be able to tell me if this pair are male or female please? I’m told they’re Wyandottes (although possibly a cross between 2 varieties), and about 6 months old...
