Thanks to all who responded! We tried it with the chick I was talking about but I guess she'd been away too long because she wasn't seeking out the hen -- kind of avoided her. So we put her with some chicks my neighbor has in a brooder. We had better luck with another chick whose mom is still...
We have some problems that arise from not having a "proper" chicken coop where newly-hatched chicks are safe -- just a barn with a few nesting areas that are not very safe for the babies (not protected from predators, danger of falling, etc.) (Please don't scold me about that -- we're doing the...
Hello again everybody. Nice of you all to respond, I really appreciate it. I thought I'd lost another chicken last night -- Fanny didn't show up at roosting time -- but this morning we found she had gotten closed up in the garage. I was very very glad
Now here's the great news: our two girls...
Well, I appreciate the input about the feed, but it doesn't make sense to me that in their third year with me, all of a sudden the feed is making them sick to the point of death. I haven't changed their feed.
I'm very disappointed in my vet. Without even hearing any details of what is...
I think when any wounds are totally healed (so they don't get infected), and she's eating pretty well and seems fairly normal. Other people may know better than me.
Good suggestion, Lunachick. I've got a call in to the vet. They don't do much with chickens but maybe they can suggest someone.
To Silkiechick, we have layer pellets mixed in. There is a fair amount of corn in there - didn't know it could cause overheating. The chickens are not old, only 2 or 3...
Oh, and I forgot! There was also a hole in Solo's craw or crop or whatever it's called. When we gave her the liquid it would drip out of the hole! But she still survived.
We fed her canned cat food (Fancy Feast) because it was soft. She gobbled it up.
I can totally relate and sympathize. The same thing happened several months ago to a young hen we'd raised ourselves. She was not only stripped of neck feathers, the hawk ripped a huge slice down her breast and the skin and feathers were hanging down. Our story had a happy ending so I'll share...
Hi Chatychick. The chickens are totally free range during the day and are only in the coop at night. I supplement their diet with scratch grains and keep them provided with water (there's also a pond they can drink from). We live out in the country.
Thanks for your condolences, and the link. I doubt it's heat because it's been relatively cool here this summer -- only broke 90 degrees a couple of times. I wish I could provide more info. I'll check out the website.
Hello everybody, I'm new to raising chickens and to this forum. I've had a small flock for 2 or 3 years and aside from predators have had no problems until now. I've just lost my third chicken in a month. The first one, a rooster, showed symptoms of respiratory distress for a few days before...
