Sorry for the delay, I was away from this sight for a while.
In the behind the fence image, from left to right:
Princess, Fredi, Lynn, Henrietta & Ricky
In the overhead view, my girls are, by location in image:
Fredi (light grey), Henrietta (black & orange), Lynn (dark grey)
. . . . . . Ricky...
Ridiculous that they expect 5 acres for chickens, creatures that can be happy with under 20 sq ft/each. I may be able to assist, my name is Chris, live one town over from your sister in Gates, I too am a Chicken Wrangler (lol) with 5 girls of my own who live in a backyard run about 25' × 20'.
As...
I have had chickens for just over a year. New to "chicken husbandry" in April 24. I keep track of number of eggs/ day and saw that my 5 girls noticeably increased egg production in the 2nd week of March this spring.
Also, depending on what the weather and amount of sunlight your girls are exposed to each day, part of the reasoning could be due to the girls 'slowing down' due to winter.
Ok, this past Wednesday 11/6/24, I found five eggs in one of the coop's nesting boxes. So all 5 of my girls have laid an egg! Thursday, I again only got 3 eggs, fingers crossed on later today Fri 11/8????
Girls that started laying in December, interesting. What breeds were those girls? I have 2 girls that are not yet laying, the first is a 25 week old Easter Egger, the 2nd is a 26 or 27 week old hen called an Americauna, but from what I have since deduced is most likely a different variety of...
Wow! You just changed your girls over to layer feed at 5 months (21+ weeks)? I have 5 all born in March (23-25 weeks old) and they have been on layer feed since early July. Three of my girls have been laying consistently for over a month now, the first one started laying in mid July. Similarly I...
Hi Altairsky,
I didn't, nor do I plan to get chicks from the egg. If and when I need too add to my flock, I will purchase baby 'peeps'. This year, when we had them in a container in the house, they were in a clear tote that was at floor level, due mostly to not having anywhere that we could...
When I go out to "tuck them in" at night, I talk to them in English, saying Goodnight and then each of their names (Lynn, Henrietta, Ricky, Fredi, and Princess). I will also say "doh, doh, doh" at least 5 times as well, as per a book I have "How to speak Chicken", this is how chickens say good...
While MOST days I am getting 2 or 3 eggs, these girls occasionally confuse me. One week ago, I had 2 regular eggs, as well as a third 'egg' with NO calcium shell, ONLY the inner membrane. And when I 'opened' it, I saw that it was in fact an egg, and assuming I did not nick the yolk, when...
Yes Jener8or, they do come running over to me, any time I am near or entering their run area. 4 of the 5 will eat out of my hand. The most timid (Fredi) even runs from food or treats I toss on the ground near her. (Sigh!) :(

Makes sense. Here in Rochester NY, it is light by 6:30am, and it stays light until about 8:15. So I still have over 13 hours of sunlight (weather permitting).
I get that, I would have figured that after 20+ weeks, they all should be laying. I guess I'll need to research when the specific breeds normally begin laying. ⏱️
