To insulate or not to insulate?

Quote: Since a 1x4 actually measures 3/4 x 3-1/2 you are dealing with the same thickness as 3/4 plywood. And since I imagine you will be using 4x8 sheets of plywood, you will have far fewer seams than using 1x4. I believe when people use 1x for the exterior they use something larger like a 1x8...

    Paint question

I don't know if this is the right answer or not but I used opaque wood stain, not paint.

    Just Starting Out

Quote: Take a look at the pictures here and let me know if you still think it's a hen. It has been making some crowing noises as well. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=528180

When to open up the nest box?

Is there a problem with opening it up sooner?

When to open up the nest box?

Now that you say that, I think that 16 weeks is what I remember reading.

    Our New Coop

Quote: It got kind of tricky. We still wanted access to the hutch lid from outside the run so we put chicken wire around the bottom of the hutch on the sides and back, but ran the run wire right up to the sides and top. Don't know if that makes any sense but here are a few pictures...

To insulate or not to insulate?

I'm confused now. Everything I have read says that chickens should be able to withstand any winters we get here in the states without the benefit of insulation. I didn't insulate mine and we're in SE Michigan. I hope that wasn't a mistake.

When to open up the nest box?

We have 6 Golden Comets, 2 Leghorns and 2 Black Sexlinks. The Comets are about 10 weeks old, the Leghorns about 9 weeks old and the Sexlinks about 8 weeks old. I read somewhere that we should block off the nest boxes until about 20 weeks so that the hens don't decide to roost in them or some...

Can I put the nest boxes directly under the roosting polls on floor?

Why does the roost need to be higher than the nest boxes?

    Another Hen or Rooster Question

We bought 6 Comet chicks. They were all supposed to be hens. One of them is quite a bit bigger than the rest and is making some funny noises now. He / she is about 10 weeks old. I'm thinking we have a rooster. What say you? As a second question, do you think the black / brown one is a Wyandotte?

    Our New Coop

My attempt at designing and building a chicken coop (with plenty of help from the wife and children): In the design phase: When finished: We decided to integrate the rabbit hutch with the run. I built a covering for it as you can see in the photo.
