    Egg Yolk Peritonitis

Thank you for your response and advice! She is dropping weight very fast, but still eating and drinking. I must have caught my last one well into it's progress, so I'm grateful I was at least able to identify this girl earlier so I can end her suffering earlier. When we first got chickens...

    Egg Yolk Peritonitis

Hi everyone - I had one of my red sex link hens (5 years old) develop EYP in December of last year, and with all of your help and advice was able to treat her with fish mox and extend her life for another month. I'm looking for advice for the same issue again. With my hen from December, by the...

    Droopy wing, old hen

Update - my girl definitely has EYP :( In the last 3 days her belly has gotten more swollen and her poops are signature EYP poops. I’ve now had 2/6 of my red sex links develop EYP by 5 years old. I’m treating her with amoxicillin, but I know the diagnosis is ultimately fatal - her comb is...

    Droopy wing, old hen

i might move her to a dog crate in the coop, I’m going to keep her separate for a couple days just to see how she does where I’m close to supplies. She was resting comfortable when I checked on her just now, she’s drank and ate a little and got up and started pecking around when I went out...

    Droopy wing, old hen

Update: I pulled her and upon inspection without being attacked by a rooster, her belly is swollen and her wing is definitely injured. Looks like she was bullied. She’s resting now in her own stall in my barn, I have a feeling she laid internally 😔 going to give her nutridrench and keep an eye...

    Droopy wing, old hen

Thank you for your response! I haven’t added or removed any hens since last winter. She’s always been skittish of the rooster, but she’s never ran and hid like she did today before. I noticed once last week she was the last into the coop and he attacked her when she came in quickly. Sometimes...

    Droopy wing, old hen

Hi everyone, I’m hoping for some advice. I have a 5 year old red sex link, she’s the last of my original 6 hens. She’s lowest in the pecking order in my coop of 11 hens and a Brahma rooster. 3 years ago one of my horses stepped on her leg and broke it, but we were able to splint it and she...

    Possibly eggbound hen? Help!

Thank you. I tried to document her symptoms and different treatments I tried on this thread as best I could. I admire everyone who does the necropsies and find them incredibly insightful. I hope to one day be able to do them on mine, just couldn't bring myself to with this girl. I do follow...

    Possibly eggbound hen? Help!

I just wanted to update anyone following - my hen passed away last night. Last week she started to really come around - her energy was good, she was eating layer pellets again, making noise, walking all over, tail raising and not puffy anymore. This is after treating her with Corid for...

    Possibly eggbound hen? Help!

it definitely feels like fluid versus air but I could always be wrong? What would it mean if it’s air?

    Possibly eggbound hen? Help!

I’ve noticed the last 2 days that she is retaining fluid in her neck (pictures below). She’s acting much more lively these days and is still on amox and nutri drench. Her crop is draining every night. Her poops are much more solid now, still dark green/brown and white, no egg type matter...

    Frostbite Amputation

im sorry about your boy! I am still amazed at how resilient chickens are. My only suggestion with the bleeding would be to bring him in for a few days, do warm epsom salt soaks and apply bluecote (May have spelled that wrong), and wrap them. I only suggest that to prevent infection since they’re...

Frostbite, lost both feet - My hens story

A cap would work if there was a way to keep it on. She just has stumps so bending isn’t an issue, but she does try to scratch with them sometimes and anything that wasn’t fitted perfectly would come off. I tried putting loose bandages on her once and she had them off in minutes, she’s clever lol

Frostbite, lost both feet - My hens story

All of the others were ok, just shook up. I had an open horse stall thankfully so they moved into there until we could get the coop turned back over and fixed. My property is on a shale bed, and so so so wet all year round, so Getting posts into the ground has been a huge challenge. My husband...

Frostbite, lost both feet - My hens story

Thank you all for the nice comments! I actually have a coworker that has a friend in college that wanted to try some prosthetic feet for her! I’ve done a lot of research on them and am worried about making it more difficult on her and myself. She gets around so good in her coban wrap shoes...
