Thank you. She is a lovely bird. She is always in the run when I come to lock them in the coop at night, she has to say goodnight when the others have gone in but really I think she is on patrol looking out for the others to ensure they are all in.
Your photos have upset me, it is dirty in that box too, they need to be in a much larger space, enclosed run with coop. Maybe you should consider rehoming them.
I think it depends on the chicken, the light as well. My 5 silkies hatched July 2020 started to lay November 24th and lay on average 4 eggs a day. I believe they are laying as they are young and next winter they may not according to people with experience on this site. It is winter here in...
Thanks. Good. I think also the fact I have never got 5 eggs usually only 4 a day threw me. However I am grateful for those eggs, they are all silkies and seem to lay a bit more than I expected.
Hi
I have 5 young hens or so I thought as I read when an egg is fertilized there appears to be a sort of bull eyes mark in the middle? Do you think I may have a roo I posing as a hen? Thanks
Yes they will get bigger. My first silkie egg was tiny but over a few weeks got bigger. Also when they first started laying, I had two double yolkers that I believe is not uncommon when hens first start to lay.
Thanks very informative. Yes they are young, 6 months old. It is centigrade, appreciate this is probably quite warm compared to some places but very cold for us! Yes there is a tiny light outside the coop that probably throws a bit of light through the ventilation grill. I put it there as I...
Yes I would agree silkie is a roo, I had 9 silkies incubated hatch and had 3 roos and 6 females and studied them daily. I had to re-home the roos due to rules and with one of the boys let one of the hens go with him as they were close and didn't want him to go alone. Also the roos tend to...
My 5 six month old silkie hens have been laying since 24 November. I get between 3-5 eggs a day from them which is great but it is -2 temperature at the moment and I was hoping so they conserve their energy for extra heat they would stop laying but they haven't? Everyday despite being cold...
To let you know happily I broke her broodiness. Took 3 days, basically I brought her in the house coolest room for three nights mainly as it was cold outside temperatures and she wasn't huddling up with others to keep warm in coop but she sat on empty nest. Took her out during day and put in...
It would but not sure if could elevate off floor. Although I haven't been watching her all day on the nest, not sure if she has gone out for water or food, would be difficult to put water in coop for her as it would get spilt and can't risk coop getting wet as silkies not good getting wet. I...
At the moment it is 1 degree centigrade going to -2 degrees overnight. The run is covered and unless rain was blowing it, it is quite dry as has 12" perspex around bottom of caging.
Thanks. I have a dog cage. However my concern is it is very cold outside at the moment. Last night as she was still on nest and wasn't piling up with the flock as usual, I was concerned she would get too cold although coop is well bedded. I brought her in the house and put her in the cage...
