That's so funny! I daresay she is even better than he. I'll be curious to know if she changes to a roo. I saw a PBS special that talked about it "The Private Lives of Chickens" I think it was called ;)
I think making a saddle or apron would help. If you do a search on BYC for saddle or sweater you can find patterns and pictures. Some even make them from polar fleece for warmth. Good luck with Gigi.
Thanks, Odelia. No, no bleeding, but I think a few feathers are missing from the back of her head and she had a very minor wound behind her eye earlier this week. That's what really prompted me to ask. I didn't realize being at the bottom meant continual bullying.
That's so interesting about...
Morning All,
I have 6 hens. Five are standard size and one, Mabel, is a bantam. I know now that having just one little one was a bad idea. She has one friend in an EE, but the other four are mean to her. She has to be constantly wary of her space whether she is free-ranging or in the coop for...
I'm so disappointed. I discovered my Easter Egger on the best this morning (24 weeks old). I was so excited for our first blue/green eggs, only to find she's been the Sweetpea laying the beautiful brownies. Oh, well. Our other EE was taken by a raccoon in the night about a month ago. Still miss her.
That's kind of what I thought, but I'm not fully comfortable with the idea of feed up in the coop. I haven't had a rodent problem yet, but that seems like an invitation. Right now I keep feed & water and treats down below in the run.
I've never heard of a forage cake, but I'll look it up! Thanks.
So your hens needed some help to start laying? It sounds like some do, some don't I guess.
No, haven't started to lay. Yes, I knew they wouldn't start until winter when I got them. We were on a two-week family vacation in late June/early July so I had to wait til July 9 to get them. Couldn't leave my babies in someone else's care. Couldn't wait til next spring, either. This had to be...
True. I wasn't worried about cost so much because I'm using CFLs, but now I'm reading here on another thread (love this community!!) that incandescents provide the spectrum they need to lay. More expensive.
Wow! Thank you for that. I actually started the light on a recommendation from folks at my grain store. They usually give me tricks of the trade while I buy my feed.
On that note- So you don't leave anything in the feeder? Do you ration? I just leave it in the hanging feeder & so far so good...
So I decided to put a light in the coop because I'm so excited to finally get our first eggs (5 month old hens). I keep the food & water down below in the run to discourage rodents up in the coop where they roost. But now that the light is on, they're milling about with nothing to do! They're...
I know this sounds crazy, but anytime I've ever peeked into the coop, whether it's 9pm or midnight, my hens (just 3) always crane their necks to look and are softly clucking. I thought they would be sound, still sleepers with eyes closed like when they were chicks. They are 4 months old.
