I do not know if this will help but we use saw-dust in their sleeping area, we buy it from our local pet and feed store.
We use nesting straw in the nesting boxes which we also get from the store.
We also placed plastic 1 egg in each of the nests, but once they started laying we took...
OK reading this thread shows me that we did the right thing. Here is our answer to a broody hen.
There is water and feed for the broody hen we let her out just before dusk
when they head up into the coop for the night and we block off the nesting boxes
so they can't try to nest at night.

Ummm we have silkies 6 of them 2 are laying , they have just started laying for the first time
and one of them is laying on the floor of the coop which has 2 nesting boxes.
I put 2 nesting boxes in the run which are under cover but are still in the open.
Do they need some more privacy as they...
After a bad start with out flock and loosing 3 chickens , which only left us with 4.
Today we found 2 eggs in the nesting box.
Our first pair of silkie eggs , very small eggs. lol!
These are extra large eggs from the supermarket next to our 2 silkie eggs.
Thankyou.
We have used BYC a lot since we join up and have found out much about chickens and their behavior.
BYC has been a great help in supplying information about what was affecting our flock and remedies to help them.
We can't thank the members that supplied help and support.
Thanks again for the input about our sick silkies.
We lost another one and only have 4 left. I hope these are OK now they look better , much stronger and more active.
New faltpack coop. Only had them for a few weeks now. Supposed to be 16 to 18 weeks old.
The one that died has gone so can not check to see what she died from.
But the one that's sick is like her sister we think , and she is kinda doing the same things.
Camilla is limping and just sits there...
Looking for answers.
We are new to having backyard chickens and we got 6 silkie bantams well 7 actually. One died within a week and a half????
It just got very lethargic was eating but only small amounts then just would sit there , head tucked in over her shoulders like she was have a sleep...
Well I have some sad news and some good news.
We lost Ethel and had to replace her with Angel a white Silkie.
We have also coated the Coop with Weather Protection Varnish and an Aussie flag. lol!
