Yeah, she does look like a Rhode Island Red. I have had them before, but when I bought her four months ago, they told me she was a Cinnamon Queen (not that I had a preference), and it’s probably hard to tell the difference but either way I would’ve expected her to start laying by now based on my...

I loved my Buff Orpingtons, especially Chelsey who was broody several times - setting on other chickens’ eggs, especially her buddy the Easter Egger, Rhianna’s eggs. When I tried to add other likely fertilized eggs because we had a very active rooster, she pushed them out of the...

Recently, I was gonna remove the spurs on my huge Brahma rooster, Clarence, and evidently I had let them go for too long and they were not releasing easily as they had in the past. They were very resistant and in fact were hard and calcified as a horn that I might’ve found on my goats. So I...
No, I do not bathe them often. Only when it seems necessary, although they seem to enjoy it so in the warm weather, maybe I should. It’s an opportunity to handle the Chickens and examine them. I gave a bath to her because she had a lot of poopy feathers and it looked like her butt was...
I gave my full grown Brahma hen and even larger rooster each a bath today. They calm down when they’re in the warm water and also had shampoo and a little dawn dishwasher soap to try to cut through some of the grind on their feet. I think they enjoyed it.
I’m in Southwest Ohio do you know if deer eat hydrangeas and are they toxic to them? If in general they’re toxic to animals but it seems like every time I grow a hydrangea it disappears. I’m assuming the deer are eating it.
Excellent review and chart of egg colors. Thanks a lot for that. I do like to have different kind of chickens that lay different color eggs that way it’s a clue to which chickens are laying.
My favorite chickens have been: the Easter egger so little and gentle and a little skittish, but reliable...
43° here in Southwest Ohio, and gonna be 55 today. But likely to be rainy. Yes, we did have those really cold temperatures there for a while getting below zero occasionally. The cold temps and snow offered a challenge, but I could close up the small chicken house to help keep them warm and cozy...
it appears that I have a mite infestation as well. based on all the comments on this site that appears to be a problem for a lot of people this year. Are they brought in by wild birds? There have always been a few wild birds coming and going to help themselves to the feed, but I didn’t see that...
I did some research and Tractor Supply does have this product
Gordon's Permethrin 10 Livestock and Premise Insecticide Spray, 8 oz that is supposed to be acceptable to use on chickens as well as just about any other animal according to specifications. It’s a 10% concentration. There’s probably...
Well, they sure look a lot alike except I believe lice has six legs and a mite has eight? What I saw crawling around on the vent of this particular chicken was so tiny I could not count the legs, but it was a tiny brown speck that was moving. I guess I’d have to capture one and look at it under...
Is treating with Diametheasus powder, DE sufficient for getting rid of mites infestation? If I use chemicals, do I have to keep the chickens out of the coop? I’ve heard that because it’s poisonous to them also. Please advise.
