    He actually has no more layers to trade right now so he's just taking the rooster back today. We're fine with that, but I think if we get any more it won't be from this farm!

    Thank you! That helps a lot. We've already discovered we had one very young rooster in this bunch, so now I'm skeptical of what we were sold. We just wanted to start with healthy young layers. I love this site and will have lots of questions as we learn what we are doing! :)

    Recently acquired a flock of RIR hens that we were told were all a year or "just a bit over". Take a look at this big fluffy girl on the left and her spur. We haven't inspected her vent to see what that looks like, but just from experience (and we have none) would you pick her out of a lineup...

    Would you bother "winterizing" this coop in central Arkansas for RIRs?

    Hello, this is our first week (ever) with new hens after having a coop built this year. We have 7 Rhode Island Reds. Winters here in central AR are all over the place. We can wear shorts one week and have ice the next. We may get one good snowfall, but temps generally stay above freezing...
