I wish I could lower the nests, but they’re built in that way. It’s a good sized coop for 2 hens, so maybe I could block them off and put a nest box on the floor. Then I could raise the roost up.
I have a pair of sweet ISA Brown girls. They are perfect except they sleep in their nest boxes all the time. 😑
I use a cat box scooper to get the poop and dirty pine shavings out, but it’s hard to get in there everyday.
My solution is sticking disposable foil/tin baking pans in there!

I completely agree! We are in the city and have just a pair of ISA Browns, Bubbles and Banjo. They each lay an egg a day. For my husband, son, and myself that’s a dozen a week and the perfect amount. We can still gift a half-dozen to friends here and there. They are great birds and quite docile...
I ended up swapping my standard EEs for 3 Cochin bantams. 1 black and 2 partridge. Night and day personality difference from my standards. These little girls are SO SWEET.
Beeeder said they are 4.5 months old. How big will there eggs be? Any pictures? I LOVE these gals.
Thanks for the advice! Maybe I’ll save the lettuce for me then and get some sprouts tomorrow. So, change the food, separate the oyster shells (some on the ground), sprouts and vitamin rich veggies, and they get just a palmful of boss/mealworm/scratch mix - not too much. Then when it gets nicer...
Yes, I am in Wisconsin and we have a foot of snow currently, but the ground outside the sand run is wood chips and dirt since they destroyed the grass. We dump all our grass clipping in for them, and also have a summer garden with herbs, spinach, all the good stuff for them and now they love it...
Thank you!! I will try that. They are EE’s but each is half something else - 1 salmon faverolle, 1 Houdan, and one Americauna (the one being bullied). I did put some Pick no More on her bottom and they seem to HATE it. The saddle has been protecting her back quite well.
Thanks for the tips! Yes, when it’s dry on the ground, they play outside the run half the time. I do mix oyster shells in their food, but will try the all flock instead. Can they still lay eggs while on all flock? Iceberg lettuce was on sale for .89, so I picked up a couple of those to feed them...
I haven’t been noticing the feathers laying around, so maybe they are eating them. I feed them Nutrena layer pellets and they were good all summer and fall, but I can switch them to feather fixer for a month and see if that helps. They also get dried mealworm and boss for treats. Sometimes...
I have 3 little EE hens. First year with chickens and loving it!
We’re almost through winter and I have my first issue. I have 1 bully who likes to feather pick the one that I thought was the boss. I have a saddle and blu-kote on the one getting picked, and going to try making up some homemade...
