Installed the Omlet door and "chunnel" yesterday. The hens gave it a try and have caught on to it very fast. Completed tunnel: Omlet door installed with tunnel sides in place: First one out! The view of the coop and run from my family room window:

"Chunnel" :) Yes! I like that term. I have an Omlet solar door that will be added to the side of the coop and the last two pieces to be built are the tunnel and nest boxes. For the tunnel, I left an opening in the run that was about 42" wide and 30" tall. The run is 36" away from the coop...

More progress from yesterday. Got the rest of the hardware cloth, door and roof installed. We were even able to move the hens out for a couple hours to explore their new run.

More work done today! We prefabricated the walls for the run in the garage. The run will be 10' wide by 8' deep. My ground crew worked with me to set and level the 2x6 foundation. Once it was parallel to the coop and squared up, we set the walls. Walls set in place and the roof rafters...

    Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Just found this thread and am jumping in to introduce myself and gain some more local information. We live in Snohomish. We had a flock of 5 chickens at our last house for 6 years. Selling the house last year, the coop and hens stayed with the new owners. I wasn't active on BYC but have...

Talk me off the Ledge... $2000 for a chicken coop!

My guess is that it came from an architect focused on actual buildings, not one focused on producing eggs. Last time I checked, most architect degree programs don't have an emphasis on proper chicken habitat or coop design. On the flip side, I also don't see many chicken farmers drawing and...

Talk me off the Ledge... $2000 for a chicken coop!

I agree. The current inflation is something probably no one has ever seen in their lifetime. What we are seeing in the current state of inflation is an amplified ripple effect of supply and demand. In the last year, production and shipping came to a halt because of the worldwide pandemic. As...

Talk me off the Ledge... $2000 for a chicken coop!

This is the idea that people need to grasp and understand. Just because the price seems insane to one person doesn't mean that it is. It could very likely be considered an affordable value to another. It's easy for people to say "You spent what? I did it for $$$ cheaper!" The bottom line is...

    My chickens seem cramped?

They need fresh ground to peck, scratch and do their thing. They will be happier for it.

    My chickens seem cramped?

You're actually in a VERY good spot. It sounds like you're committed (paid upfront?) to these 2 hens. Other than expanding their run area to give them a little more space, let it ride! See how the summer/fall goes with 2 and take notes. Questions to ask: - Are you and your husband both...
