    Let’s Design My Fridge Incubator

I took some time off but have made lots of progress since last August but I have just got around to finishing. I did end up with an incubator side and a hatcher side. After a week of hatching I have some results. Incubator Side: Starting from the bottom the heat chamber...

    Homemade winecooler incubator

The fan thing is stalling my project too. I had the opposite encounter with my computer fan. It made me feel like I was riding down the road with the windows down.

    Let’s Design My Fridge Incubator

I sort of got forced on the issue. The seal of the duct (using some special polyethylene tape came all loose today so I took it all off. I have a smaller 4" fan in my collection that is much less "serious" at 12v and will run at 5v. I am going to re-do the duct with flex dryer vent and let it...

    Let’s Design My Fridge Incubator

It’s been a while but I do have some progress. I decided to go with the big side as an incubator and the small side as a hatcher. I had the Freon removed and stripped all of the fridge stuff out. I cut a hole at the top for a 5” computer fan and built a duct from aluminum flashing to route...

    Let’s Design My Fridge Incubator

So I have like many others lost faith in the hovabator. I have never gotten over a 30% hatch and it’s time to move on. Hopefully some folks who have built before me can share some insight. The starting unit is a full size side by side refrigerator. I already have the following in hand or in...

Is it possible to swap a hen's chicks?

I think I know the answer to this is no, but...... I have a barred rock hen in her own pen with 6 chicks that she hatched. The pen is chain link so the chicks leave and wander all over the place during the day, but she still watches out for them and they come running when she calls. These...

First ever hatch and need advice for next time

Can you tell me what model ranco you used? I am thinking that might let me move it outside to the garage.

First ever hatch and need advice for next time

That's a good idea about flipping my fan to blow up. It should accomplish the same thing by circulating the air and no direct breeze on the hatching chicks. I'm going to do that this week and then load the unit with a full load of eggs this weekend.

First ever hatch and need advice for next time

That's another good point about the bowling balls. With only 14 eggs, there was a lot of rolling around. I don't think there would be any harm in taking hatched chicks to a pre-warmed brooder pretty quickly. I tried to leave them 24 hours and by the time the first ones came out they were...

First ever hatch and need advice for next time

So I just finished my first hatch. I’m happy with the results but would like to get better for next time. I am hoping some of the experts can provide insights. I set 14 barred rock eggs in my hovabator (also equipped with computer fan and auto egg turner) on 12/31. Eggs were taken from coop...
