Southern States got a load of Easter Eggers that the hatchery told them was Araucanas. Easter Eggers are great birds, but if you are looking for standard bred Araucanas or Ameraucanas do a little research first. There are...
Just left the Southern States in Sumter and they got in a load of pullets this morning. Araucanas, Gold Laced Wyandottes, Buff Orpingtons, and Production Reds. They were supposed to get RIR's, too but they weren't there. Not sure if they will be coming soon or if it'll have to be the next order...
For Sumter folks, I just talked to Southern States. They're expecting 2000 chicks on March 16. RIR's, Wynedottes, Production reds, Buff Orpingtons, and Americaunas.
The manager at Southern States in Sumter is Brent. We go to church together. He can tell you when they'll be getting in the first chicks and may be able to get the breed you want. Last spring, he added some Buff Orpingtons to an order for me. They also don't have a minimum. I get my feed and...
I have hung mine with a piece of chain. I put a snap at the bottom of the chain so that I can easily take it down to fill. My run is covered with a steel roof, so I screwed a j-hook into a ceiling joist to hang the chain from. One of the benefits is that I have been able to raise the feeder...
I integrated 4 week old Buff Orpingtons with 8 week old Cuckoo Marans and Brown Leghorns about a month ago.
The older pullets were confined to the coop at the time. I simply put the youngsters in the coop one afternoon with the intention of them being in there for an hour and was ready to pull...
I'm in the south, so I can't speak to insulating a coop - mine has small gaps on purpose to allow for better ventilation.
I would suggest being ready to move your chicks to the coop when the night time temps consistently stay in the 60s or if your chicks are fully feathered out. Usually chicks...
I also want to add that I was worried that my chicks would have trouble figuring this feeder out. That was an ill placed fear. They figured it out on no time.
Now, with this feeder and a nipple watering system fed from a rain barrel filled from runoff from my run roof, I could leave my flock...
I also used a jig saw since I couldn't see spending $25 for a drill bit for two holes. I started a tad small and used a razor knife to trim the edges to make a tight fit. Be careful with that razor blade, though!!!
There's nothing better than sitting out by the run late on a Friday with a cold adult beverage watching the flock do its thing before dusk.
I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day holiday and thank you to all of the families who have sacrificed your loved ones for the...
I have recently added nipple waterers that are fed by a rain barrel that is filled from a gutter on the metal roof that covers by run. It's only been two weeks and no problems so far. I was worried about the chicks figuring out the nipples, but they figured it out pretty quick.
One of the great things about chickens is that you can make whatever you want to out if it. I have a two year old another one on the way, so I don't have lots of time to spend with a flock. I've got a small coop and have self waterers and feeders that can hold a weeks worth of food.
Others get...
