You can mix it, but they will probably pick it out because it's like CANDY! :plbb I've had great weather, so I throw it in the grass and give them something to do. When they see me coming down with a pail of "crack" in the afternoon, they pull up their skirts and run toward me! :wee

I put dry oats in a pan, then add hot tap water until it makes a mushy consistency. Let it set for a few minutes before delivering a warm breakfast.

My peeps won't eat scraps, but they love oatmeal! Especially in the colder months. Dried mealworms are a good protein boost. I also mix a 1:1 all flock feed & layer mix.

Chicken gone light, due to mites?

Update: I have a friend up the road who has LOTS of years of experience with chickens. He came and examined her. Said everything looks good, except her face. The sides of her beak appear swollen. He wonders if it's an allergy? Any ideas? still eating okay

She poo-pooed the albacore tuna. So I gave it to the rest of them & they went crazy for it. When you say wet cat food do you mean wet the dry kibble or give canned food?

Chicken gone light, due to mites?

ChickNanny13, thanks for the reassurance regarding Permethrin. I discovered the mites while she was caged & rubbed her down with DE and sprinkled it in the bedding. Started her on the probiotic and extra treats. Coop was cleaned out, and I made an indoor dust bath with sand, and DE (I live in...

Chicken gone light, due to mites?

Yes. Just treated for the first time tonight. I read that many didn't feel DE works to treat mites. That's why I decided to treat with Permethrin. She hasn't shown any signs of being irritated, and she didn't have that many mites compared to what I've read about with an "infestation". Skin...

Chicken gone light, due to mites?

Thank you for the link to the article. Very interesting, but none of it sounds like my chicken. This all started at the end of Summer when I had a broody hen. We removed the eggs, and then they went through a molt. This one never seemed to recover. I think a big part of it was a too-long top...

Chicken gone light, due to mites?

Same gray chicken I shared about a couple of weeks ago. She's been in the hospital cage in the garage with a heat light for 2 weeks. Used DE for small amount of red mites around vent. No lice. DE in cage too. Hen Boost probiotics in water. Feeding a mix of all flock and layer crumbles. Treats...

Yeah, I'm planning for more this Spring! Also working on a lavender farm so my peeps will be smelling lovely ;). They free range all day, so that's a lot of poo around the farm.

    Can't figure out what's wrong

Thanks, Mary. Giving both a try. Update: Hen's crop is FULL! This weight loss may have originated with a too long beak & ineffective eating, maybe making her more susceptible to mites as no one else has them.
