Sorry, just seeing your response back. I've been dealing with the regular end of summer happenings here in MI! sp. ft. is plenty for 4. Like I said before I had 16 in a 4.5'x8'. How are your little chicks doing?

I believe that if you are going to build a coop from nothing, make it easiest for you to take care of! My main concerns with my second coop were accessibility for myself and predator proof for my girls. They are very happy and have plenty of space. Sorry for the long post! Hope this is helpful :)

I also dug down 12" under the entire thing, placed chicken wire down and wired it to the walls of my run to predator proof it. My walls are a 10'x10' metal horse stall, wrapped in chicken wire, including over the top for climbing predators. I allow the girls to free-range still, but some of them...

My roost is all one height all the way around so there is no issue with a pecking order hierarchy. I have nearly 20' of roost and they all snuggle up on about 10 of it. This time around my run is about 18'x10' and is more than enough room! I do have 10' tall sides and some old tree branches in...

My flock has since grown to 25 girls - Now I have a 10' x10' shed with 8ft walls, raised about 4" off the ground. The only treated wood is what touches the ground. I also got a linoleum floor remnant from a local flooring company and it was my best upgrade this time around! I put sand and...

I just wanted to send a message along to you. I read through your post about advice on starting your flock and what size coop. I did all the same research and reading that you did and started with a small coop for my first flock. It was 4.5' x 8' and I had 16 hens in there. My run was only...

    New Backyard Chicken Momma

Chicken math is real - You've got that right! MY flock grew just one year later. You can't have just a small flock. Luckily I prepared my coop for a much larger flock from the beginning.

    Hello fellow chicken lovers!

Yes! but I think the cats are more interested in getting outside to see the newest chicks! My dog on the other-hand knows the chickens as her "girls"
