If you haven't found it yet, according to Picture This app, the plant is Halbert-leaf Yellow Violet. Botanical name: Viola Hastata. Will have yellow and purple blooms in April and May. I got the app to identify plants with berries that are safe or not for my chickens.

There used to be a random peacock wandering in the field across the street from Giant in Jennersville. Haven't seen in it in over a year now though. The peacocks at Plumpton Park Zoo are probably mimicking the kids who chase them yelling "come back", while trying to get a feather!

Hi! I am not too far from you- Chester County, about a mile from Maryland. I had 5 in a coop that is 4X6 (not counting nesting box spaces) and they were fine last winter. Only 2-3 times did the small waterer I keep inside have a little ice on top, outside waterer is a different story. We do get...

    Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Good Morning! I live in SE PA, Chester County. I have 26 Australorps that are 6 ½ wks old. Currently they are in my garage in a 4 X 8 brooder that they are outgrowing! I would like to put them in their coop/run today but looks like the weather at night is going to dip into the 30/40’s at night...

    Hatchery Chicks

I will be holding onto them for awhile, just in case. Since they are raised together, maybe my son will take 2 as long as they get along, just incase something happens to one. We both have property that borders wooded areas. Guess we'll see. I wouldn't mind having a hen hatch out...

Sorry about your chickens, that was a fear of mine. I am glad they are sending you replacement chicks. It sounds like a nice mix you ordered.

    Hatchery Chicks

I did check the hatchery website but did not find any statement referencing this. I was just wondering what I could expect. A friend of mine ordered 50 chicks from a hatchery in Quakertown, PA, 4 months ago and was fortunate enough to get all females. If I have too many roos, I am sure I...

    Hatchery Chicks

Thanks everyone for your input. I can only imagine how difficult it is to sex day old chicks! Here's hoping to only 2 and it gets along with my current roo. I also thought I was just going to be able to keep my 1st 6! I guess not! My son is already talking about adding more......

    Hatchery Chicks

I am splitting this batch with my son. This will be his first batch of chickens. I am going to keep 8/9 of the girls and he will take the rest. My current rooster has 4 hens and 3 are really getting feathers tore up. The top hen even chases my rooster around so he is pretty calm, and has...

    Hatchery Chicks

I ordered 25 female black australorp chicks from Myer Hatchery (?Forks, Pa) and I received 26 live beautiful little ones. They were hatched on August 05, 20. I was hoping for 25 female chicks, but I have my suspicions that I may have a few males. This is my first time ordering from...

If feed stores closed and you can’t free range...

Not my idea but I read in another BYC conversation that a farming family would hang a dead rat/mouse inside the chicken coop (in a wire cradle) during summer months. Flies would lay eggs and when hatched the maggots would drop onto the floor for chickens to eat. I have never tried this but...

My Dog is eating chicken poop, is this harmful?

I have 3 dogs and was just at the vet with one of them and asked this question. I was concerned with them getting salmonella. He said that unless they already have a compromised immune system, they should be fine. I try to stop them from eating chicken poo, but they find it as tasty as the...
