In most bird species, if egg bound they can’t poop I thought? I have a 3 year old hen with beautiful feathers that has never looked better just standing around and not foraging. At dusk, she didn’t coop up. Butt a little poopy and liquid poop... seemed to not have great balance. Any ideas? Her...
I don’t know why anyone buys chicks from TSC. Low quality, tons of sexing and breed mistakes and really high mortality. I LOVE Meyer Hatchery for hatchery chicks. Tons of breeds, really nice quality, healthy chicks and they arrive at your local post office in a day or two. Great, family run company.
Seems unethical they would have sent one like that. I use Meyer Hatchery and that never would have been given to someone at least without consent. I would do my best to try to help her survive, I would notify the hatchery and not buy there again. Quality control and possibly genetics in question...
How many days of incubation before candling? If candling at day 5, it is likely too soon. Try at 7-10 days instead. Depending on breed, egg color can impact ease of candling too. When you crack an egg for breakfast, do you see the white fuzzy halo of the fertilized bullseye?
Do you see the...
It sounds like this bird was a sort of failure to thrive fatality and more like a genetic defect then disease? If other hens that were previously healthy start to pass away in a similar manner, then I would start to push the panic button. Survival of the fittest? As they approach breeding age...
Three things trigger breeding in hookbill parrots: temp, light and feeding. Things like sleep huts or newspaper on the grate can also trigger them.
When a hen decides it is time to start a family, she needs to be provided a nestbox to lay the clutch, and sit and incubate them. When they do not...
No, only psitticines. It is called Psitticine Beak and Feather Disease. There is a company in the USA that will test from a small blood sample taken from cutting a toenail a bit short and they charge 24.50 USD to perform the test. Maybe you have something similar.
Check the toes. I have found the ones from hatcheries to have improper toe placement. Of my three, one has the 5th toe straight up in the air almost against the leg, one has two toenails on one toe, and the other has a curly toe. If I was to do it again, I would get them from a show breeder...
