I so needed that little vid :)
I think good animals know "babies" on some instinctual level - mother chickens keeping baby kittens warm, that kind of thing. Baby ducks, baby person, it's like the trio share some little innate secret pact of innocence. Completely adorable :)
Hi Kathy,
I thought they were seeds from the straw and grasses in the enclosure and they were only apparent in the photo. In hindsight, yes I believe they were eggs. I wasn't going to go there, but this photo is the first day. The photo you said looked like yolk is from the morning of the...
Thanks Miss Lydia, I will definitely have to rework their housing in order to have any ability to separate them for a brooding cycle and I'm not sure how that would work. They have been constantly together since hatch and they share a 2.5' x 4' dog house for egg laying and sleeping/shelter...
I'll put in a pitch for Ancona's. Lay daily and through the winter with just a night light - they get a night light because I live in the country dark with predators, can't stand it if I hear something outside and can't see if they are safe. Michigan had some crazy winter conditions and they...
She was the last and the only one to hatch out. All the others quit at various stages and a few infertiles went rotten. A community of 4, one drake and 3 ducks, just turned a year old. They were all by appearances and observation, dedicated but I left them be until day 21, not wanting to...
Yolk sack is now a bit puddly but she made it through the night and she is no longer attached to the egg shell fragments. Temps held 81-85F but the humidity is down to 38%.
She hatched under a broody trio in straw, the odd bits you see are straw bits. I pick off the straw bits as she dries and it doesn't disturb her or the yolk. Is that right? Getting the temp higher, I have to watch the climb so I don't bake her.
Thank You for helping!!!
I'll get a better pic, I wasn't disturbing her - that is the number one thing I've read on any weak/helped duckling.
It was definitely yolk - about 2 stacked nickles worth. I disturbed her and took a pic and it is significantly reduced. Raising temp and loading a new picture.
She's sleep "peeping" occasionally and is still more sleep twitchy - increasing motion vs. decreasing motion. I hope that is a good sign.
Steady at 84F and 41% humidity based on my temp hydrometer right next to her bowl. It has been a few hours and her movements increase continuously. I...
