UPDATE: I wanted to provide an update for anyone who needs help with what we went through. As of today, our chicken is not only doing exceptionally well, but the prolapse is gone, she is laying regularly, is quite active and getting used to foraging outside again but still separated from our...
She survived the night. When I went to check on her in the morning, she was standing expectantly, facing me at the door like she was ready to leave the coop. She pooped. It was soft, not hard at all, a rather significant amount like she had been holding it in all night. She’d had some blood in...
She’s not passing at the moment. She’s hardly had anything to eat for 10 hours. The last time she passed was when we first attempted to push in the prolapsed egg before intervention (the time I first made this post). We made saline (exactly as you described as well) for the surgery. Cleaned the...
What I noticed initially was the poop vent was visible, but not the oviduct. Every way we turned showed that the exit for feces was pressed out against the egg that was forming behind it. The egg was the texture of sandpaper, with thin shell and a tougher membrane. At this moment, about 3 hours...
Bumping for visibility. We made a call. There was no exit point in the oviduct we could see no matter how much we looked. We made an incision to remove the bound egg. It was her first. Minimal bleeding, we incised the thinnest part to remove the egg. Inserted the prolapse, coated in olive oil...
Please help! One of my hens looks like she has a bound egg and prolapsed vent! We tried pushing it in, but it keeps coming out. We’re soaking her in our sink with warm water. We have Prep H and sugar. We are deep in the Swedish countryside and no access to a vet, what can we do? Can we save her...
Hello! We were delighted this morning to find what looks like our first egg. However the shell was incredibly thin, so thin it could easily be crushed if we weren’t careful. The membrane was in tact, but the shell itself felt like sandpaper. We offer free choice oyster shells, have plenty of...
We’re installing latches this weekend :) The ramp is currently used to bar the doors securely at night at the moment. We’re in Sweden so foxes and birds of prey are our biggest threats.
Everyone, thank you all for all the helpful tips and advice. This evening we put a little light in the coop and 9 out of 10 went in on their own. It seems that was what was needed. I do appreciate everyone taking their time to help me. I’m a first time chicken owner and very much want my...
Yes. The longer side of the new coop has a large window/door (not pictured) and ventilation. The back of the coop has the same kind of door as the front as well.
The gifted coop, no, it had very poor ventilation which is why we moved them out almost immediately. The larger one yes. We’ve spared no expense with making sure this coop has what they need.
Update: Thank you all for the assistance. A little light was installed and that was just what was needed for them.
Hi everyone,
Hope I can get some much needed help on this. We have ten English buff orpington chickens and two coops. One was gifted to us, and one - much larger than the gifted...
