Thanks. I'll make sure I have the brooder set up and ready, as well as the incubator in case I need to pop them in last minute. Would it be safe to go out at night and check them with a light to see how far along they are?
Luckily it's been hot as hell out so if one hatches and she isn't...
Our oldest are around 2 years and 7 months, 2 hens and a roo. The male is still virile as ever, and both hens are still laying (one has currently been broody for 2 weeks!) There are so many variables....where the original eggs were sourced from, their diet and environment, etc.
We have an outdoor ground aviary with quite a few hens and 2 roos. There have been a few times that some hens have gotten broody but it's never lasted more than a day or two. On May 14th we noticed one of our older hens hoarding eggs in a turned over pot (a lot of the hens like to lay there). We...
Update - unfortunately while she was broody, our new hatch hit sexual maturity and we had way too many males. This caused chaos for a few days and she was too busy running away from incompetent roos to sit. We candled the eggs before tossing and it's a shame, they seemed to be developing well...
A little background...we built a large outdoor aviary for all our quail. Currently have 4 males and 12 females. Over the months there are a few spots they would lay eggs and sit in them here or there, but never continously.
Yesterday I found our favorite hen in one of the new "nest" spots. She...
Okay then maybe it is the heat wave. I'm in TX and it's been like 100s daily for the past few weeks. The ones I helped out came out basically running, like I don't think they would have lasted much longer stuck in there. Makes me sad to possibly lose healthy chicks just because the membrane is...
50% until lockdown, then at 70% for lockdown. The only time we opened the incubator was to take out the turner for lockdown, we didn't even candle this group (usually we open it at least twice to check fertility).
I just had to assist 5 chicks that pipped over 24 hours ago but were making no progress. They were yelling in their shells and struggling like crazy. When i went to intervene the membrane (outer) was SO thick and rubbery. There is no way they would have been able to puncture it. How do I prevent...
Day 14 or 15 seems to be standard. I do 14 because it seems like our always pipping by day 15.
Once they start pipping I reccomend taking notes on what time they pip (not sure if you numbered your eggs). It helps me to know when they've been pipped and not making progress too long (32+ hours)...
You think that's bad, we can't wear sandals in the coop anymore because one of our hens is obsessed with pecking our toes. We've got another who jumps up anytime our hand is within a foot of the ground because it thinks we have mealworms.
This says it's for Oklahoma but it's a really good resource for quail safe plants. I usually just ctrl+f anything I want to feed them and as long as it pops up then they're good to go...
