Gravel works fine, mine never had any health problems. The only problem I had was cleaning up after the girls. It's hard to sift through or wash the feces out of the gravel, and composting feces with the gravel almost seems wasteful. But composting cut grass, straw, or pine chips seems a little...
As for prevention, you may need to find someone to trap them...as long as your local law permits trapping. My first hen was taken in a 15 minute time period when I went inside to get a cup of water. Finally I spotted the fox stalking my girls and waiting for me to go inside again. Many...
It sounds like you have a fox in the area. The fox that snatched 5 of mine did the same thing. They are know to grab and run without leaving a feather, and take them to a different often secluded area to dispatch. I apologize if I sound harsh, but I have a serious fox problem.
Wow! I had no idea! But it makes sense. Thanks. As for your sand removal issue, maybe see if a neighbor has a tractor with a bucket attachment, or a few friends may help with shovels, or sometimes local handymen may have small tractors with front end loaders.

I haven't tried that yet, but sometimes in the plumbing industry they use something called heat tape on copper and steel piping. It's electrically heated wire they wrap around piping to stop it from freezing . But I'm not sure if the water would be to hot for the chickens but I believe it turns...
Nice ! Thanks everyone for your input. It all makes sense now, so in order to get the "surprise package" I either need to get busy building more coops or get a tobacco barn :o) .
Hi everyone! New guy here. I don't have any chickens yet because I'm currently building a 6x8 coop. But I have been reading this thread and have become interested in the surprise package. . What size are yalls coops to hold a "bushel " of chicks, the coop must be huge right ?
