I think they all must develop differently. I wouldn't want to speculate on sex at that early of an age. I was positive mt SFH was a male until she laid her first egg!

Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

What a change a few weeks makes! Lily (from previous post) is maturing into one beautiful bird! She is intelligent, no longer pecking at her "sisters," and really gets along with both the 9-week old chicks as well as the 2-year old hens I had before. She has integrated into the existing flock...

    Australorps breed Thread

I had 2 BA, and they didn't show much of a comb at all at 3.5 weeks. They started showing more around 7-8 weeks, and then it was just a small yellow comb.

What's With My 5-week Old Chick?

Thanks for all you help and advice. My husband keeps telling me he thinks she's going to be the prettiest one of all!

What's With My 5-week Old Chick?

Thanks-that is probably what it is. She is my only Speckled Sussex. I love their coloring-the feathers she has coming in are a beautiful pattern. I guess I will just have to be patient until she gets through this gawky stage!

What's With My 5-week Old Chick?

Here are some pictures-not very good, as she is constantly moving! I think the funniest things she has going right now are no tail feathers, a crazy half-feathered neck, and all the baby fuzz sticking out between her feathers.

What's With My 5-week Old Chick?

Well, she is 9 weeks old now, and is the funniest looking chick ever. She eats, drinks, and poops normally. She is super active, running faster than any of the other chickens. She can get up onto the roof brace on the pen, which is above my head. She, and her two same-age chick friends, are...

What's With My 5-week Old Chick?

Thank you. I will watch her and monitor her growth. She is always the first to the food dish and the last to leave, and is drinking along with the other 2 chicks. She will probably turn out to be the prettiest of them all when her feathers come in. Hearing everyone's thought and experiences...

What's With My 5-week Old Chick?

I checked her walk this morning. Seemed fine, so that must have been a picture catching her at an awkward moment. Her gait is the same as the others.

What's With My 5-week Old Chick?

That does help a lot. That was probably what it was. I can't believe how weird chickens can get when dust bathing! Ginger (formally Ginger Pye) perhaps feels the heat more than the other 2 with more feathers. Maybe the cool, damp sand felt good and she was totally spaced out. I did disturb her...

What's With My 5-week Old Chick?

Sorry-Maybe these are better? I added the last one as it shows her wing bone sticking out. You can see some feathers just starting on her head and neck.

What's With My 5-week Old Chick?

Thank you for the replies. They are eating Purina Chick Starter Crumbles (medicated), but will be switching to the same brand but unmedicated as they integrate with my layers. Not much in the line of treats yet-a little crumbled up "Baby Cake," but they don't seem too interested. Here is a...

What's With My 5-week Old Chick?

I have 3 5-week old chicks, a silver laced Wyandotte, a white Marans, and a speckled Sussex. All has been going well. They have been in the outside "baby coop" getting used to my 3 2-year old hens (separated by wire). Ginger, my speckled Sussex, has always been smaller and slower to develop than...

Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi, everyone! I am new to this thread-just got my first Marans chick 3 weeks ago. She is a White Marans from Meyer Hatchery. She is very healthy and her white feathers are really coming in and looking beautiful. I named her Lily (a name my granddaughter picked out) Angelica (my choice), because...
