Chicks are 8 weeks and a few days old now. The two Isbars have red combs and wattles so… I only added one or two pics of them since I’m pretty sure their cover is blown, lol. I’m mostly wondering about the Barnevelder and Chocolate Orpington — said to be slow maturing. Both were slow to feather...
Thanks! I agree… I’m still crossing my fingers for Isbar 2. The Barnevelder was very slow to feather and took forever to get a tail, so I was suspicious, but no wattles or comb yet and she looks like a pulley to me right now. Will update at 7 weeks with more pics of the suspects.
I agree… Isbar 1 and the orpington both show early wattles that are fairly red. Isbar 2 seems iffy to me - still pretty pink comb, and no wattles yet. But I’ll be surprised if Isbar 1 and the orp aren’t cockerels.
I’ve taken photos at 3 and 5 weeks so far of my 7 chicks — New Hampshire Red, Easter Egger, Barnevelder, Olive Egger, Chocolate Orpington and 2 Isbars. All from Mount Healthy. All hatchery sexed as pullets. My guess at 5 weeks is anywhere from 1-3 cockerels, but I’ll be curious to see how close...
I have one 3 week old EE who may have a small gap between top/bottom beak (not cross beak, they look like they are aligned correctly), but there's a small space where food keeps getting trapped and drying so that I see a little bit of it from the side, and can use my fingernail to loosen and...
We've had a small flock for about 15 years, but I haven't posted here in years... work and raising kids kind of overtook me. Our hens have all been elderly for awhile. Now that my husband and I are empty nesters, we felt it was a good time to fill the nest with some chicks :) My daughters are 24...
I'm new here :-) We have had chickens for about 15 years (small flock of 6-8) but it's been a while since we brooded babies and I feel like I'm learning everything all over again.
We have 7 1-week-olds (mixed -- 2 Isbars, 1 New Hamp, 1 EE, 1 OE, 1 Choc Orp, and 1 Barnevelder). I was reading up...
Yes, as I posted I plan to quarantine—but they aren’t silkies... they are Bantam Brahmas. My main concern is the temperature issues during/after quarantine.
Hi everyone -
I’ve got three cream legbars, a blue copper maran, two coro Sussex and an old (8 years) auntie bantam SL wyandotte. We lost four hens in a dog attack at the end of November, and have an 8x8 coop with a 10x20 run.
I’m thinking about adding in two buff Brahma bantams (18 mos old)...
Hi all --
We're in Colorado, and looking for someone with bantam Cochins... My daughter (13) had a nice old bantam cochin hen, her favorite, but the hen died recently at the age of about 7. We live in town, so it's hard for us to do straight run because we can't have a roo, but she's looking for...
I was curious toread this thread... we have a two-week old Welsummer chick who looks much like this. Her crop generally is very big, but kind of off to the side--more on the right than the left. Because she's eating and drinking and seems to feel fine, I've just been keeping an eye on her, but...
