Thanks -- I forgot to mention that in my post. Chick Boost in the water. I gave her a little NutriDrench too. About the same. The other chicks were only with her in the box on the way home and for a few minutes in the brooder -- I isolated her as soon as I saw her breathing, but so far this...
The EE did FINALLY lay a blue egg -- almost exactly a year after her hatch date. So... if anyone comes across my earlier comment, just wanted to mention that she did start laying.
I picked up my chick order at the feed store this morning, and it's a feed store I use often because they are careful with their biosec measures, and the chicks have always been healthy and well-managed.
I picked up six chicks, and 5 of them are active and healthy, eating and drinking and...
Thanks for this thread... I was coming here to ask the same question. We have an olive egger (named Olive) who has been laying since about September (March hatch). I've been egg-shaming my one-year-old EE Isabella Bird (same hatch date) because I didn't think she was laying, but maybe she's been...
I don’t use supplemental lighting.
I have a small young flock right now, though we’ve had chickens for about 15 years. Picking up 5-6 more chicks this spring. All of my current hens hatched late Feb 2025. The Orpington, Olive Egger and Barnevelder all started laying in late summer. The New...
I came to ask the same question. I've got a small flock using the Grandpa's feeder and it has been great. Our mouse population has all but disappeared. But now I want to add 5-6 more chickens, and will probably just get them as chicks. They'll be in the brooder until it warms up, and we'll...
Finally following up with info on which were cockerels. The chocolate Orpington, I’m happy to say, is a hen (photo attached). Both Isbars were, as expected, Roos. All the rest were pullets.
Chicks are 8 weeks and a few days old now. The two Isbars have red combs and wattles so… I only added one or two pics of them since I’m pretty sure their cover is blown, lol. I’m mostly wondering about the Barnevelder and Chocolate Orpington — said to be slow maturing. Both were slow to feather...
Thanks! I agree… I’m still crossing my fingers for Isbar 2. The Barnevelder was very slow to feather and took forever to get a tail, so I was suspicious, but no wattles or comb yet and she looks like a pulley to me right now. Will update at 7 weeks with more pics of the suspects.
I agree… Isbar 1 and the orpington both show early wattles that are fairly red. Isbar 2 seems iffy to me - still pretty pink comb, and no wattles yet. But I’ll be surprised if Isbar 1 and the orp aren’t cockerels.
I’ve taken photos at 3 and 5 weeks so far of my 7 chicks — New Hampshire Red, Easter Egger, Barnevelder, Olive Egger, Chocolate Orpington and 2 Isbars. All from Mount Healthy. All hatchery sexed as pullets. My guess at 5 weeks is anywhere from 1-3 cockerels, but I’ll be curious to see how close...
I have one 3 week old EE who may have a small gap between top/bottom beak (not cross beak, they look like they are aligned correctly), but there's a small space where food keeps getting trapped and drying so that I see a little bit of it from the side, and can use my fingernail to loosen and...
