I'm a wannabe homesteader living in a town where it's not allowed. So I help my friend who has a hobby farm. I've put money into gardens that were eaten by deer, into container gardens that were drowned by all the rain or roasted in the heat, I have 1 dead beehive and have re-filled it with bees twice. Now my challenge is to do all this without spending another penny, because I haven't got any.
For all the fails I've had successes to grow on. Growing carrots in a 5 gallon bucket worked beautifully!
My farming friends wants to add my beehive to his farm. He'll buy the bees and expand the hives and I'll manage the bees. That satisfies my wants for learning to keep bees and make a lovely product.
Opportunities come along and I've spent a lot of time engrossed in reading and learning about what interests me.
I also keep aquarium pets, I've also raised a mass of duckweed in the fishes summer swimming pool and donated the duckweed to local backyard chicken keepers.
My starring advice for all things homestead: When taking advice consider first the difference in climate zones between you and your advisor. If they won't tell you what their region is, walk away. Farming is local.
I live in climate zone 5; growing zone 3, Latitude 45, north eastern NY. It better grow fast and either like the bitter cold or the blazing heat, there isn't an in between for very long.
