I did the same thing, my chicks are now 8 weeks old and all are doing fine. After I was getting low on feed I did switch to the 20% bag. But no problems as health wise with the 12 I started on a higher protein.
I meant to ask are you putting them into a extisting flock if so wait till they are about same size? If putting them into a coop by themselves,no problem.Hope this helps.

I dont think there is a advantage one way or another. Chicks seems like they pick at each other with the red bulb. Personaly I perfer the red bulb instead ,but has used both.As long you used the correct watts and have correct temp for baby chicks really dont matter. Hope this helps you out.
