Surprisingly the chick did a whole 180 on its personality. I'm not exactly sure what happened, but it just suddenly decided to be more quiet and calm one day right as I was about to decide its fate. It's currently still alive with its friends and doing well though still very very very tiny and a...
I always turn off the heat lamp at night and I already stored it away since its familiar with the brooder now. It's still yapping up a storm even with no visible sign of injuries and the company of 2 other chicks.
Holding the chick gets it quiet, but I don't have time to handle it 24/7. It...
There's no wood chippings in the brooder yet and yes she does poop just fine. She eats and drinks plenty. Pasty butt seems is a reoccurring issue that I always get until it resolves itself when their a few weeks old.
Today I decided to put her in her own brooder just to see what would happen...
I don't have a thermo, but it feels warm on my hand when its near the ground.
Other than the food tray, I laid some piles of food on the ground near their heater plate if their not comfortable leaving it and some other spots. The water bowl is half within the heat lamp range and half out of...
It's in a mesh playpen like this. I have both a heater plate and a heat lamp on. The heater plate is at an angle with one low and one high end. The heat lamp is on the other side where their food/water bowls are. There are spots away from both where they can be cool if they need to. I always use...
Please help y'all, I'm gonna tear my hair out. I have this one chick who WOULD NOT STOP CHIRPING IN DISTRESS. From sunrise to sundown it would NOT STOP. The most annoying thing is there's no reason for it to be distressed. It has proper heating, fellow chicks to play and snuggle with...
For ya'll that ever used liquid permethrin how's your experience with it? Any recommended brand?
I was considering on treating my backyard premises with permethrin. There's a slight fly problem and this weird unidentifiable bug that likes to camp under the nest box (comes in black & red, size...
Is it alright to have vaccinated chickens with unvaccinated ones?
My flock of 4 are all unvaccinated. I was thinking of purchasing some pullets from a breeder online. The breeder is NPIP/AI/PT certified and vaccinates everything. I'm afraid that purchasing a vaccinated chicken might introduce...
I'm interested! Sent a PM with some questions
Edit: Heads up for anyone else that is interested too. OP isn't responding to any messages. Will update whenever they do.
I also thought the same thing. Raccoons do exist where I live, but are super rare to see especially in the mornings. In my years 20+ years of living here I only saw a raccoon once at night.
The stray cat feels like a false alarm for sure. I definitely will start installing more cameras around...
Update: Possibly found the predator.
I set up a trap tonight thought it would be a rat, possum, or raccoon. It end up catching a stray cat. As much as I want to get revenge for my favorite chicken, I simply can't do that to a cat even if it was the culprit. I plan to move it far away from my...
Thank you so much everyone for your kind words and sharing your experiences. Sometimes I still think I hear her chirps outside when I go on my walks. It hurts, but I hope with time I can look back fondly on my memories with Carrot.
How do you guys cope when you lose your favorite chicken suddenly?
I had a 3-month old Silver D'uccle chick that died this morning either from a predator or a self-inflicted wound I'm unsure. She was the only one that survived in her batch of 6 (4 were infertile/1 failed to thrive after 3...
