We got pretty infested and I don't think poison did much (they actually made a bed in one of the black poison boxes). I took out the hanging feeder and toss some scratch/feed in at morning and night in a area of the run, did that 3-4 nights before doing the next step. Then at night I lock the...
Growing up we would just split the coop with wood and cinder blocks. We had about 100 chicks on the chick side and the hens managed to get through one day and killed all but a few, they were leghorns, it was brutal.
I think you might do better with less birds in that amount of space. The more you overcrowd the less eggs per bird you will get and the more social issues you will have with them. I have a 9'x5' coop with a 10'x3' run and would be hesitant to do more than 10 birds. There is no reason for me to...
Thanks for the suggestions.
I have a couple updates. After giving them vetrx last evening we had a heavy thunder/lightning storm over the night. I found one of the original hens (a leghorn) dead in the laying box this morning. i did a quick autopsy on her and looked in her intestines and...
Must of been something wrong with those specific blue/green eggs, assuming they wer a standard chicken egg like our Americanas you cant tell the difference between white/brown/green eggs.
BTW we love Wal-Mart here in Texas, plenty of other stuff that a family with kids need besides eggs that...
My hens haven't laid in about a month now. I have 4 that were laying and added a couple more younger pullets that should be laying about now. (I also lost (died) one of my original birds in this time as well as a new pullet) I don't know if it's the heat or they got a disease from the new...
I don't sell them because we don't have enough to sell. In the area you can get easily $4.00 a dozen, you might be able to get $5.00 or more if you go all organics and get a few buyers for them, in Austin the organics deal has gotten pretty big. Also it wouldn't help to have the most colorful...
I just finished my run this weekend. I live in a community so had to be cautious of it "sitting out" as a coop. I attached it to our shed (to the right)
I actually am into code enforcement which animal control is part of that. It's not what I "do" but I'm involved in it in several municipals here in Texas. Surprisingly most the smaller communities have heavy restrictions against poultry, typical homes can not have poultry. However many cities do...
A coop doesn't have to be big (i.e. 4' per chicken) if you have a run or free range them to make up the sq', I see two types of "coops" for sale here, first being a coop which is simply the laying area (not a run). The second thing I see are the light "Mobile" coops, which seems to me to be more...
I sprayed them with a mite spray a couple weeks ago and plan on doing it again tomorrow. The coop is 4' by 9' with two raised nesting boxes and three raised 12" x 24" roosts as well as a 4' x 12" walk in front of the nesting boxes. The hens also sit on top of the nesting box walls, the nesting...
