Hey Spunky! Shouldn't be a problem at all! Chickens can eat almost anything. Just check on this site for a thread regarding foods that can be toxic over time.

I first bought a 1month old pair from an Indian fellow who stayed near me, and then later another hen at 1 week of age... only to discover that the "pair" was infact 2 hens, and the baby hen was infact a rooster.
None of these are show quality...

I've had success removing eggs from the floor and placing them in the nest box/area.
The next day (or when she needs to lay again) she will probably lay where you want her to.

I did investigation into running an incubator through loadshedding, and found the setup cost to be about R4500
Basically you will need a deep cycle car battery, an invertor, a charger, and a switch/mechanism to allow the battery to take over when the power is out.
