It is, I don't agree with it in any respect, ironically the advert I saw said something along the lines of 'can you give a chicken a forever home?'. Big business cares not.
Anyway they have a great life now, at first they looked extremely confused at what that big yellow thing in the sky was...
Hi thank you! Unfortunately commercial farms around here cull the birds when they are past 1 year and replace with new flocks. The farm I took 20 from had 10,000 for sale at £1 each! I don't agree with this practice but from what I hear they managed to re-home all 10,000 which is great.
Hi guys, I'm starting a small thread here to join in the forum and show my successes and failures at raising my 28 Rhode Island Reds. This community has helped me a lot with some issues I was having and I very much appreciate that!
I initially purchased 11 birds in Spring of 2016, I lost two...
Thank you! I did the water test with them an they are viable, still very fresh actually I poached two of them this morning they were delicious! I do have a roost bar in the coop for them but after reading what you wrote I will add some more and also build a little play area for them out of...
Thank you all so much for the detailed replies! I read a few of the first ones after posting and it got me thinking, so I went and had a really good search around the pen for some clues and a fresh perspective. I also had a talk to some other chicken owners in the village to get their thoughts...
Hello everyone, I have a question that I'm hoping someone with more experience could maybe help me out with. In the summer of 2016 I purchased 11 chickens from a well known farm here in the UK. They were young and after a few weeks began laying. They were fantastic layers and kept producing eggs...
Hello everyone, I was told about this section of the site and thought I would stop by and say hi. I'm relatively new to keeping chickens, 2 months ago I bought 11 hens from a farm in Huddersfield. They have been laying for around 4 weeks now. Recently I have been getting up to 12 eggs a day. I...
Hi guys I was wondering if anyone could give me a little advice? I have noticed one of my hens seems to like sitting on the eggs when they have been laid in the coop, is she trying to incubate them by any chance? If so, do you think I could buy some fertile eggs and hatch some chicks with her? I...
Thanks for the warm welcome everyone, this is a great site I'm learning a lot from the forums also. I will take a look at the UK threads thank you.
I'll have to upload some pictures of my ladies when I can. They are giving me 8-10 eggs per day now, I have been giving them to people in the...
Thank you both :). Yes they are adorable aren't they, I am very new to owning chickens, I recently managed to acquire myself an allotment which came with a large pen and coup all ready to use. I am learning gradually and yes thank you so much - your info on what to feed what not feed was very...
Hello there, I found this site looking for info on what scraps to feed my chickens. Excellent information and glad to see I have been doing something right with them. I purchased 11 commercial layers (not sure of the exact breed this is what the farm told me they were) 5 weeks ago. They started...
