Hi all!
Lost my entire laying flock to a fox a couple weeks ago. Thankfully I have some pullets to take their place. I just finished doing a deep clean of the coop and have the pullets locked in the coop for the next few days to assimilate to their new home. During this time, I am trying to...
Hi there :)
Well.... she’s doing well, believe it or not. Normal poops, bright shiny red comb and waddles. She’s as with it as ever, but she’s still never laid an egg since the bloody one. She does try to sit in the nest boxes every once and while but hasn’t ever been productive. I figure...
She came from a hatchery. I will say her behavior in general is strange compared to others I’ve had. She’s pretty docile, sweet and a bit demure. Is fine to be on her own. When I would let them out in the yard, she would usually stay behind by the food and water and just lay in the grass while...
She just turned one a couple weeks ago. She’s barely a hen herself! But she’s gone broody on me a couple times this year already. I have not given her eggs to hatch. I usually let them stay broody for a bit and then break them by putting them in a crate for a couple days. I was planning to crate...
Hi all!
Have a strange one for ya. Was curious if anyone had any advice or similar experience.
Today we deep cleaned the coop because we were finally melding together the hens with the new girls, 2 1/2 month old pullets. They’ve been spending the last few weeks together in the chicken yard. As...
She’s doing okay. She started acting normal-ish again, so she’s still with the other girls. She seems to do well in the morning, and then as afternoon hits, she looses her steam and hangs back from everyone else. She still has not passed another egg, although I think she may have laid a...
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
Black Australorp, just shy of 2 years old. Not sure what her actual weight is. Her weight seems about normal.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
She is not acting herself. Keeping away from...
Hi All,
Yesterday afternoon, my flock got attacked. I lost 5 hens of my 7. 4 I found scattered in the chicken yard. Either up against a fence or pulled under logs or a bush. The only noticeable wounds I could find were small fang like bites to the neck, and a considerable amount of feathers...
Hello BYC crew,
Ive noticed some strange behavior in some of my 9 mo old pullets. Specifically with 2 Easter Eggers, but I've also noticed some others doing it too. The EE's usually start it off, and I notice some of the other girls start doing it too.
As I went to close them in their run, my...
I would agree with you Barnhart. With my first flock (before the newbies came in) she was at the bottom of the pecking order. But after we lost a few of the hens from the first flock and added the new girls, she was at the top of the pecking order, and probably the most aggressive, but only with...
Its funny that you mention this, because they seemed to be scared to go into their run and coop, which is normally a safe place for them. Even when I came back with meal worms to get them in the coop after I found Ruth, they tried to avoid it at all costs and took 2 of us about 30 minutes to...
I also should mention, I noticed that once the "molt" started, her eye color got very red. I'm newer to chickens, and have not had another chicken molt as dramatically as she did, so I don't know if this is apart of it or not. Has anyone experienced this in their chickens before? Another friend...
I did not pull back many of her feathers. She was super stiff, so it was hard to move her at all. She also had a lot of missing feathers from her molt, so she wasn't as fluffy as she normally is and a little easier to see parts of her body. Maybe I should go do another look.
Thats what I was reading in other posts. But I have a really hard time believing another dog could have made it in and out of the chicken yard undetected. We have two dogs, but they are separated from the chickens by an electric fence. Then, there is about 20 feet before the chicken fence starts...
