So if it's most likely environmental or social, means I can change it. I don't want to slaughter the bird if I don't have to because she gives good eggs. Do you think it's any of the reasons I listed or should I be looking at other factors?
Could recent predators trying to get in trigger her to...
One of my female coturnix quails just recently started pecking my hands and even jumping up to peck me whenever I go to feed them (or anyone that tries to feed them). It only started a few weeks ago. She is about 6 months old and at around 5-6 weeks old she seemed to just snap and attacked all...
My son's immunologist checked for any empirical data regarding the non allergenic aspects of quail eggs. He couldn't find anything. This means it is a great opportunity for research, though the doctor suspects there would be a lot of similarities with chicken eggs.
To anyone interested, my son had a skin prick test today. He is allergic to chicken eggs and we were hoping quail eggs would be a good alternative for him. Unfortunately the results show he is just as allergic to quail eggs. Some articles out there rave about how quail eggs are non allergenic...

Thanks for the suggestion. It's hard to find medicated gamebird feed where I live unfortunately. My remaining birds have reached the one week milestone now and growing fast. It's a relief. Whatever went wrong I'm just so glad it's going well now.
Is it possible that the early hatching chicks were from different parents and the later hatching chicks were inbred? Is weakness typical of being inbred? I'm just confused why the early hatching ones are still doing ok but the others died really fast. And that's good to know about the...
Thanks for the links.
Yes I think they possibly have ulcerative enteritis (quail disease). Went to the vet/pet store and all the antibiotics available said not for use on birds produced for meat and eggs, which was the point of me hatching them. And I also read on various sites not to ever eat...
I've given my quails vegetables from my garden before. I find that it depends on the quail; some will just gobble it up and some won't even look at it. I hold the stem and they peck at the leaves and rip it off the stem that I am holding. One day my toddler dropped a baby rice biscuit on the...
The thermometer shows the brooder is 31-32 degrees Celcius at the warmest end, and their water is at the other end where it is cooler but I haven't checked the temperature there. They seem somewhat evenly spread out, but most of the time towards the warm end. The incubator is 37.8 degrees...
I am not sure what is going wrong. This is my second time hatching coturnix quails. I don't know what information would be relevant so I will just provide all the info I can and hopefully someone can tell me what is happening.
Incubated 48 eggs from my own birds. I hatched the parent birds...
Oh wow that's great news! Gives me a little hope for my son and his egg allergies. In a few weeks we will be going to his immunologist and I'll ask about the quail eggs then. I haven't been game to feed any to him without the doctor's go ahead. Bit scary :P
I'd love to know if any hatch...
My coturnix babies started hatching today! Still in the incubator so no pics of them yet. I'm thrilled though and spent some time grinding up game bird crumbles for them :)
Hi Lollypop. Just so you know if you do start letting your quails forage around or if you start feeding them bugs, you do need to worm them also to keep them healthy.
