Is it typical for pullets this young to go broody? New for me so was totally thrown off, plus its getting so close to winter here so was a bit of a weird for timing. I guess I'll have to pull out the dog kennel for this girl.
Hi everyone,
I have a young pullet named Munchkin, she is a mixed breed and was hatched on April 23rd so almost 6 months old. She started laying small blue/green eggs about a month ago and had been laying regularly the last 2 weeks almost daily. Over a week ago she switched laying spots to my...
Thanks for the insight! Definitely part of pur self-sustainable journey as a family. Not that they dont feel like part of the fam as we care for them before their end whatever that may be.
I will keep an eye out but I'm guessing it will likely quietly pass, as you said. Thanks again.
Hi!
I'm very new to quail, I purchased a dozen hatching eggs from a local, reputable hatchery, listed as assorted coturnix quails. Out of 12, 10 hatched and 1 passed the day after hatching who happened to have spraddle legs.
They hatched May 17th and all but one are doing very well in the...
Yes she is acting very much normal and I would never have discovered the swelling if I had relied on her behaviours to indicate she was unwell.
I happened to be in the coop a few times now when she was actively laying, i check for eggs very frequenly as a couple hens have started to eat the...
The swelling seems to be more inbetween the legs and a little both infront and behind the legs in the abdominal area. I did get the supplies but I almost wonder if I should just leave her be? She is still laying and active, she doesnt seem to have trouble getting around or roosting. Chickens are...
I have a 1 year old hen, Fetty, likely mixed barred rock who is presenting with signs that point to ascites.
She is currently laying, seems the largest of my hens, top of the pecking order and preferred by the rooster.
She still acts alert and active, eats plenty, drinks well and recently has be...
I just found this egg in the coop, laid in the sand litter. I have 5 ameraucana hens that would be laying this colour and have been getting about 3 or 4 each day. One hen was previously sick in January and suffered a frostbite injury to her foot however has been doing alright now. I'm wondering...
I actually have 19 eggs in an incubator right from my girls that started laying. Its a bit of an experiment because they were exposed to meds while laying (and im still in the cant eat period) but I figured it was worth trying since I cant consume the eggs and my flock has dwindled so this might...
So we had to cull 3 of the 4 that were sick, they were just skin and bones and had stopped eating and drinking after the dewormer. I could barely get the antibiotic in, but I think it was just too late. One of them had developed huge lumps on the Tarsal (?) joint. It looked like they were...
I'm in Manitoba so I'm not sure how similar the process would be. Here in MB the vet lab that performs a full necropsy was run by the University of Manitoba. I did contact them directly to ask how to submit a deceased chicken, they directed me to go through my vet as they would need to submit a...
That was a very helpful read! Thank you.
I did their dewormer today and will be waiting a couple days as directed before doing the antibiotics. With both staphylococcus aureus and e.coli present, are any of the eggs safe to eat if cooked properly? I have just under 2 dz sitting on my counter...
