Isn't if funny how they know exactly what to do so quickly? We have three (two Rocks and one Cochin) and they always go to bed in the same order...the Cochin always goes first and makes a snoring/growling sound to alert the others that it's bedtime, then the second follows and the last usually...
What area of Seattle are you in? We are in Columbia City and have seen a hawk and racoon here or there--which concern us enough--but I never thought to worry about Eagles too...yikes! Our girls free range in our fenced backyard but now I'm a bit worried.
We've got 3 beautiful gals that were hatched in April...

We had such a hard time coming up with names the whole family could agree on...wishing I'd have seen this thread before we got them as there are some very cute and clever names...
It's been in the 90's here in Seattle (hot for us!) and our chickens are panting like crazy. We've been doing the ice cubes in the water dish trick as well as frozen treats--I gave them a scrambled egg that had been in the freezer for a little bit. Another trick I used was wetting a light dish...

We have been giving our 8 week olds grit made especially for baby chicks for the past month (graduating up from parakeet gravel/sand)--it is red granite so you can tell it apart easily from the adult grit. It probably wouldn't hurt to make it available to them in their coop just in case. We...
We ordered 3 rock chicks from mypetchicken with great results--all arrive happy and healthy--although one did turn out to be a cochin (happy surprise). I agree that getting them as chicks is much better with regards to socialization as well as making sure they're all healthy and bond as a flock...
We have 6 week old Rocks and we give them organic rolled oats and organic baby spinach (which we chop up a bit first) as treats. I sprinkle the oats in their brooder so they can actively scratch around for them all day. I've also given them worms from the backyard as a special treat every so...
