Mine also purr when I talk to them. I find that the Plymouth Barred Rocks do this the most out of our flock. I thought it was quite funny the first few times I heard it.
I have 6 hens laying and 6 boxes, and they all use 1 box! I tried to place white golf balls in the other boxes, and they pushed them out onto the floor of the coop. I just gave up and let them all lay in one box.
I have a good bit of straw in all my nesting boxes, but the hens dig it all out by morning when I return. I find it spread all over the floor and not a a bit in the boxes.
Any reason why they are doing this?
I have hooked up a small red light and regular light. They are on a timer and get 12 hours of light. 4am-4pm. I have also increased their food. Their coop is open to a pen area approx. 24' x 10' all the time.
Thanks for the comments.
I have a low watt bulb on pretty much all the time. They also have a small heat lamp. Straw for bedding. I am feeding them 16% pellets and scratch feed. There are 15 of them in total - feeding them a lg. butter tub of each - every day.
Hello!
Our girls stopped laying 2 months ago and are perfectly healthy. They are not losing feathers, and are the same weight. We increased the light in the coop but still no eggs?
Any suggestions?
I use the scratch feed to attract them back into the coop as well. I usually only take a few handfuls out, just so they get they idea to come in.
I have recently switched from Dumor crumble to pellets and they seem to love them. Any thoughts on this?
