    Any dangers with using sand?

I had to herd ours inside at first. I think I was expecting them to go to bed too early. If I went to the run at dusk, I had to herd. If I waited until dark, they went in on their own. They seem to be going in a little earlier lately. Maybe it's because the days are getting longer. Plus...

    Any dangers with using sand?

Do you put a lid on your Home Depot bucket? I have a bucket, too and I think I need to keep rain out of it, but don't know if a lid is smart either? I'm new to hoarding poop and don't know the best way to go about it! Ha! We just put sand in the run a week ago. It's wonderful! I love how easy it...

    Cracked Beak!

Hello everyone! Mabel has a cracked beak. Should we do anything about it or will this problem work out on its own? She seems to be behaving normally and eating fine. We had our Colorado Springs Coop Tour today and I hoped an experienced chicken farmer would wander into our yard with answers, but...

Is it ok to use a desk lamp instead of a heating lamp

I had the correct fixture and bulb, so I felt like I was hedging my bets the best I could. I was still a little uncomfortable leaving the light on in the house while we slept and when I wasn't home. Everything went fine and we moved the light outside to the coop when the chicks went to live in...

Chicken wire on top of run?

We started out with a corrugated metal roof on our run. It was nice, but then my husband thought the chickens would like more sunshine. So, he replaced two of the sections with clear pieces that are shaped the same as the metal. The chickens love their new sunroof and they still have shade! I...

    Do chickens sunbathe?

Our Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps sunbathe! They lie on their sides with their legs out and their wings splayed all over the place. Actually, they look dead when they do it. Usually, if one stretches out, another chicken will come over and step on the one lying down. It's like they can't...

    Our new chicken coop!

Thanks! It's 4 x 4, not counting the nesting boxes. With the two levels inside, we have about 28 square feet of floor space. So, we're probably at our max with six chickens. That's too bad since everyone we know is waiting for our girls to start laying eggs!

    Our new chicken coop!

Thanks! Yes, we have a window. We had to replace all the windows in our house a few years ago, so when Bill started building the coop, we called Window World to see if they had any of those neat sample windows. They really helped us out and so the coop has the same quality window we have in our...

    Our new chicken coop!

Hello! We're new to chickens and this is the new coop my husband built in our backyard in Colorado Springs! His dad always had chickens when we were growing up, but being teenagers, we didn't pay attention. We have four Black Australorp pullets and two Buff Orpington pullets. I would love your...
