It's definitely a weakness I have - I told hubby that next time I would do it (gulp). It is a necessity to acquire that skill. Yes, I also do agree and like that they are treated as "pets" - animals raised humanely and with love are good all the way around. ❤
I had one egg hatch with a broody hen a couple months ago (first time I've tried) and they did wonderful - fully within the existing coop - I just closed up the coop for a couple days and let them have their space after baby was born. Worked great! I loved how easy it was and that I wasn't...
Yeah... I agree with this and, fortunately, have my husband do the dirty work but if I ever do have to I'd do it VERY quickly and move on and remind myself that they are livestock and they don't have feelings. Still, very hard for a tenderhearted person! For a lot of chicken people it's not...
I had it happen recently (which is why I'm searching this topic on the forum). So sad and I feel sooo bad. They all got killed. I didn't see it happen but just found limp little fluff balls 😢
That's a really good question - I'll be watching for the answer on this one too. I just had 5 babies die and believe it was killed by another chicken but didn't see it happen. I recently had one chick hatch with a hen and pretty basically let her raise it with the other chickens and they are...
Great info! After my recent experience I'll separate my hen and chicks within the coop. It is definitely nice having mother nature take care of the care and raising of baby.
I'm thinking the pecking order matters... maybe. I had a broody hatch and lay one egg about a month ago - worked great! It was my first baby chick. She was pretty much kept in the coop locked up with the baby for a day or maybe two. I started leaving it open and the other hens came in and...
Yeah... I thought letting mom defend the babies would work and they all ended up dead. I still don't know exactly what happened but suspect that one of the other chickens killed them. There were 5 fluffy little fluff balls. One of those horrible lessons learned. It seemed to work with one of...
One of my hens was sitting on eggs when another hen went broody towards the end - when broody 1 took a break broody2 sat on her eggs. I ended up splitting them between them. Unfortunately only 1 chock hatched and they are both mothering it! They are even both sitting in the nest together...
Yes, they're lucky their so cute :) I do have one broody little silkie who will go broody for MONTHS at a time.... I haven't thought to look under her LOL .... that would be hillarious to see 12 eggs sitting under her little butt.
Right!?! I'm hearing that you can feed them scrambled eggs for protein..... I'm thinking that if I go buy EXTRA eggs to feed these guys I've really gone over the edge LOL
