Ok,it’s a very belated post, but I manage to “fence” my four adult hens, (RIR and Australorps) behind unfolded sections of free-standing metal dog pens, clipped together. (From Amazon) So far so good, it’s mobile, and re-arrangeable)
Always good to have a backup plan, IMO.
I live in drought- stricken CAs Central Valley, I see fallow fields, due to lack of water, and crops unplanted, no longer available to American consumers. Much like Ukrainian food exports, once plentiful & available to other nations, many commodities are...
I gave my neighbor a dozen fresh chicken eggs, yesterday, does that count? Ate kale frittata, home grown and produced, for dinner. Live in town, so I mainly supplement store bought staples, but where I live, you can garden year round. Planted a cherry, apricot, fig, apple, bananas, pomegranates...
I don't know how chicken genetics work, and while I understand that extra large eggs may be lighter in color, I've never had a brown-egg-laying breed present me with a white, (not light-colored) egg before. Per Cackle Hatchery, where I received Joker from, she's an Australorp, but they did not...
I've had the same experience, with a young Australorp, (brown egg-layer). This bird is a bit of a trickster, which is why she's named "Joker", I just never know what surprise I'll find in her nest box. She's my smallest hen, yet has laid eggs so large, that I've gone back over her to check her...
(Smile) I was just thinking the same; I wondered whether successfully hatching these spectacularly sized beauties would confer the “Mother of Dragons” title, on you….as in the Game of Thrones series.
When I looked for my first chicks I wanted good layers..... with strong claws. My hens have always more than earned their keep, roto-tilling my garden, you see. I don't kid myself I'm saving a dime on eggs, but I do consider them a lovely bonus, and I often use those eggs as currency, to barter...
(Smiling) Sometimes, chicks "happen" -before- their coop, and it's a race to get it finished before they're completely feathered out! Congratulations on your new babies!
And of course, welcome to BYC😀!
My Wyandotte chick was "stripey", she had what I refer to as " racing stripes ", fairly dark ones, as a click.
But my light Brahma looked completely golden...though larger in size.
You may not have a Wyandotte, but what if it's not a Leghorn, either?
You might be in for a wonderful surprise😁!
There are only three laying hens. They have an omlet coop with a 9 foot open floor run. They generally poop in the run, rarely in the coop. I change the straw in the coop when it needs it, and hose out the plastic coop floor if necessary, maybe once a year. Right now, the girls are rototilling...
Maybe half an hour, to move coop & run, feed, water, retrieve eggs, and then I’m off to care for our pet drake, and the rabbits, usually when I come home from work.
