Chickens vs. Winter (what to do when it gets REALLY cold)

i live a couple hours north of you (Fox Cities)....as long as they aren't drafty, I think they are okay. My small coop last winter stayed around 20-30 inside, and even in those way below zero temps, the chickens would stay outside during the day. This year, I have a bigger shed/coop, so I'm a...

    planting grass in coop?

I used scrap 2x4s and built rectangles of whatever size I could and covered them with hardware cloth. THen, I put them in the run (like little raised bed gardens) and sprinkled wheat seeds, marigold seeds, lettuce, whatever. The plants grow and the chickens can nibble through the hardware cloth...

****** DIY chicken feeder pipe! ******

WAY better than my attempt at a pvc feeder....4 weeks ago, i attempted to make one and wanted to use a hole saw to make holes instead of a nice, simple rectangle opening. The bit stuck into the pipe, the drill handle spun hard, and knocked two of my fingers sideways--breaking a bone in my...

    shakey legs on meat bird

I've got some meat birds that are about a week and a half old. All are doing great, but one seems to be very shakey on his legs. He walks around just fine, but has his little wings down and out like he's trying to balance. He can stand up straight, but seems to tremble all the time. I know...

Help! Rhode Island Red With Mucus Coming Out Of Its Nostrils!

My Ameracauna seemed to have the sniffles a couple weeks ago. She was snotty and had crusty boogers over her nostrils. She didn't seem to have any other respiratory issues, and none of my other hens did either. I used VetRX, smeared it all over her beak a few times a day, and she was better...

How big to mash the eggshells

I give them to my 7 year old son, who puts them in a flat spot on the driveway and steps, stomps, and jumps on them. Then, he scoops up all the pieces and puts them in my oyster shell dish in the coop. He loves his "special job"! :)

    Bumblefoot Questions

After reading all of the posts here on Bumblefoot, I was pretty confident in recognizing the signs and knowing what to do....but... Doing a foot check on my birds today--3 of them had the puffy foot with black scabs! However, none were limping, it didn't seem to hurt them...nothing. I removed...

    chicks arrived :(

My nieces slept over, we had a big campout in the livingroom. We were all up early to wait for the call from the post office. As soon as the phone rang, all four kids ran out to the van. Only 4 out of the 36 chicks survived the trip. I'm just heartbroken. There were 5 others that were still...

How many meat birds would you suggest per year?

We started with 12, because I never butchered anything in my life. They went to the freezer in May and I maybe have half left. We're getting 30 chicks in 2 weeks to do another batch. Some of our family want some for their freezers and I'm hoping to have enough to last through the winter. I don't...

    question about the cone

I used a small plastic garbage can with a hole cut in the bottom. It worked pretty well and cost me about $2. I screwed it into my workbench and put a bigger garbage can (with bag) under to catch the blood.

    are these pointy enough?

Are these pointy enough to be hackle and saddle feathers? It's a Blue Wyandotte--about 10 weeks old My B.O. has pointier feathers and acts more like a Roo than this one, so I'm still hoping for a hen. Thank you!
