When we got our very first egg, a year ago this October, my two sons and I were very excited, came into the house, cooked it up and ate it! Yummy! I don't recall taking a picture, however, this is a picture of our very first blue egg, which was very exciting! We have had our chickens for just...
I'll check for the mites. I have one rooster and 14 hens and it's obvious that the rooster is having his way by the looks of their backs. I wondered about molt, but I thought they didn't lay eggs when in molt. All my hens are bare, some worse than others, but we're still getting 8-10 eggs a day...
We have the same problem here, but several have bare legs and necks, also. They have been cooped in all winter until the last week or so when the snow started to go away and there's some dry ground. This was our first winter with chickens, so I'm hoping to find an answer, also. Thanks!
We are new to raising chickens and are having a pretty good winter, despite the snow and bitter cold temperatures! (-42 wind chill yesterday!!) I am interested in the hatching contest but have no idea where to start and how to do it. Please advise. Thanks!! :)
I just discovered a hen with an eye swelled shut. Should we put her down? Her other eye seems to be fine, and the other chickens all look fine. I certainly don't want to infect the flock. Any suggestions? Thanks.
We got our first egg about 10 days ago! My 14-year old son came back to the house so excited!! The third egg we got, my 7 yo son actually saw "plop out". He couldn't believe his good timing! We've had about 5 eggs in two weeks, three different sizes/shades, so we figure we have 3 hens laying...
I just joined backyardchickens. We bought 21 hens and 2 roosters (all chicks) this spring (breeds: Rhode Island Red, Welsummer, Dominique, Golden Laced Wyandote, Americauna). We lost one chick in the first week and up until an incident with our dog a week ago, we had no more fatalities. We now...
I've read that it's not ok to feed chickens raw soybeans. However, we live right on the farm and we just harvested the field of soybeans next to the coop. There's no way to keep them from gleaning what is left. Does that mean my chickens are doomed if they discover the beans?
