    Chicken, Duck, SAY WHAT???

Thanks for the input Bobbi-j. I found this video about a pullet in China that laid an egg within an egg. I'm going to crack ours after our scale comes from Amazon so we can get a weight:).

    Chicken, Duck, SAY WHAT???

Found a really giant egg in the nest box this afternoon. The egg in the middle is second year Khaki Campbell and we don't have geese. The egg has a really thick shell.

    Saxony Ducks

You probably already checked Holderread's? I have a young flock off their ducklings and they are beautiful. We will be hatching and raising ducklings in Nevada but alas too far from you.

    ducks suddenly dying

Do they have access to any standing water that could be harboring microtoxins and have you made sure your feed was stored dry. Any possibility of moldy feed? We lost our perfectly healthy young Australian Shepherd years ago when he drank from water leaking from a composter.

    New ducklings!

If you had an oil gland like a mother duck you could oil your babies so they could swim, but uh oh no oil gland so no swimming unless you dry them off and get them warm. I just don't let ours swim until they get feathered and preen themselves but it isn't easy to wait.

    New ducklings!

Ducklings are so much fun! This our setup. Notice the feeder is on a lid and on a brick. The brick keeps the shavings out of the feed and the lid catches feed and prevents waste. The waterer is a covered chip and dip from a thrift with holes cut just the right size. We now have an upside...

    Mealworms and other treats

Thanks Mikejr05! We did buy the starter mealworms for our colony from a reputable local aquarium store. Once I quit searching google and started using google scholar my searches for Tenebria molitor brought up no concerns. I still have to wonder if colonies grown on bran from our feed store...

HELP!!! I'm new to this, and I need some advice on Coop, Care, and possible sickness

Hello NrthrLghts, chickens should not be such a struggle:(! I did notice that your perch is smooth, round and small and probably not to their liking. Find a 1 to 2 inch diameter tree branch with bark that will fit and take down your old perch. Maybe a good nights sleep on a very solid perch...

    Saxony Ducklings From Holderread Farm

Our Saxony ducklings are 2 weeks old and growing fast. For the time being we have outsmarted their messiness by putting shavings then a tile then an inverted pot saucer then a bucket top before placing a feeder or waterer proudly atop the stack. So messy and so worth all the effort. Ducklings...

    Mealworms and other treats

Really Jensownzoo? Poop isn't the problem here and "spotter" seems to be looking for science based information as am I. Transmission of parasites and disease from meal worms in commercial feeds is avoided by the graneries through "best practices" because of the risks to the hens, then we grow...

    Mealworms and other treats

Thanks for the information, Jensownzoo! We'll keep our colonies going. We throw the babies a worm and watch them play chicky football. Would hate to spoil their fun. Jocelyn

    Mealworms and other treats

We set up several mealworm colonies for our hens but then I read several articles online from .edu sites that say darkling beetles (meal worm adults) and mealworms carry many poultry diseases and parasites. Anybody out there that can unscare me before I incinerate all our work and time getting...
