Best Material to waterproof a shelter

I ended up placing some leftover pond-liner between two layers of wood, added some silicone where I put nails. It's completely waterproof and by having a layer of wood at the top of it, they can walk all over it, leave their droppings and I can still power wash it off without damaging it.

Best Material to waterproof a shelter

I recently replaced my old wooden and leaky coop with an Eglu. I'm pretty happy with the the new coop, but the chooks don't like to go inside in the rain. As I live in a very windy area by the sea, I cannot easily cover my run to provide large shelter. I'm thinking about placing a smaller...

Can you keep only 2 chicken or introduce 1 new one to the flock?

Sadly one of our chickens was eggbound. I tried to help by bathing her several times, but this morning she was visibly in pain and hiding in a corner trying to lay all day. None of the few open vets were available to help so I had to put her down this evening. This leaves me with just two...

    Several Pullets Laying Shell-less eggs

I have 3 Pullets that have started laying between 3 weeks and 6 days ago. In the last week I have now had 5 shellless eggs: On Monday: 2 with the other chicken not laying at all, so I am not sure if it may have been punctured and they ate it or I could not see it. Today (Thursday) 3 - even...

Can you identify the predator by pattern of attack and the poo?

We live in a suburban area and none of our neighbours who have lived here for 6+ years have seen foxes or any other predators. Our garden is fully fenced (2m high, rat most an inch or 2 space between the ground and the fence) The garden is pretty bright due to street lighting being right...

    Dog and Chicken Playing

I'm hoping it will stay that way. I'm taking the pup into the run every time I feed them now, hoping it'll help him see them as part of the pack.

    Dog and Chicken Playing

Our 4 month old Shiba Inu and our Chicken love to play: Do dogs that grow up playing with chicken usually continue to do so though? Or do they eventually become overcome by the hunting instinct and will go for the not so desired kill? Another video is here:

    Chicken outside coop at 11pm

Hi everyone, My chooks usually go into the coop over night and if I go out to the run/coop about half an hour after sun set, they will be there waiting for me to lock up. Exceptions are very very rare and I there's never been more than one chook outside the coop after dusk. That said the coop...

    Gargantuan Egg

So they got a little smaller in the last few days but it's still way in excess of 80 grams. Will have a nice fry up for my brekkie tomorrow and know the star ingredients.

    Hen singled out?

I had a similar case, kept out of the coop and roosted on a raised stand I have for them to get to the feeder. I placed her in the nest box for a few nights and hung the water in the coop so that the other's would have to duck under the drinker to get to her. She's become the second in...

    Gargantuan Egg

We have a Speckeldy, a Bluebell from http://edinburghchickens.com/page2.html and a white and a black (no idea what the breeds are) from https://www.facebook.com/pages/Midlothian-Chicken-Centre. I am not entirely sure which one is the record layer, but I assume the black on from the Midlothian...

    Gargantuan Egg

One of our flock (I wish I knew who it is) has been consistently laying double yolk eggs. I commend it for doing just that, but today, when I went to the nest box I found a 108 gram - yes that's 3 7/8 oz egg in the coop. I am new to keeping chicken. Is there any way this can be harmful for the...

Can a hen suddenly lay very different eggs?

Hi Chris and thanks for the reply. What i am really try to figure out though is: Has one of the chicken recently stopped laying and another one started the next day? or is it more likely that some change, the heat, the change of feed just made the eggs from the same hen look different and the...

Can a hen suddenly lay very different eggs?

We have 4 hens, most of them in their 21st week, but one about 30 weeks old. The older one has been laying since we got her, so we had about 5 eggs a week. They were around 55 to 90 grams, with about 2 double yolk eggs per week. (See light egg below.) All eggs were the same colour though when...
