Thank you, I didn't know about the linear foot rule. I had a hunch the coop was a bit too small, but thought it could work. I also thought the sq ft rule was 2-3 inside, and 6-8 outside. I'll do some figuring on how to increase sq ft without too much trouble.
Thank you. I am curious how that is done without spooking them. From the vantage point of the photo, this is how we access the coop to clean it. I don't see a way to access the coop without causing a lot of ruckus.
We need some advice.
We have 17 hens, the dominant 5 have the lower 12 sleeping on the floor of the coop/in the nesting boxes. How can I rectify this situation so the nesting boxes will be used as intended? The coop is 6' x 8'. The hens are 4.5 mo. We have been unsuccessful in breaking this...
We have had chickens for 8 years now, and have been allowing them to free range in our fenced yard almost the entire time.
Our yard has been on a steady decline since then, and now is at a point that I would consider the yard blighted, severely distressed.
For those who allow their flock to...
We decided to start over with 18 new chicks, 9 BSL's and 9 RIR's. They are now 7 weeks old, and would like to know if we can introduce them to the current flock of 11, 6 CQ's and 5 RIR's. Our original plan to but the new chicks in an old fenced off garden with their own coop, but now have...
The coop is 2' above ground, and the ramp is approximately 4' long with several cleats already.
I will try the mealworm remedy, and add a few more cleats. Let's hope this works.
Thanks for the advice.
We rebuilt our coop, and started over with a new flock of RIR & Cinnamon Queen. We introduced the flock to the coop last Monday, kept them inside with heat lamp until Thursday. Then introduced them to the run, and moved them back into the coop overnight. Easter Sunday, we wanted to see if they...
Thanks everyone! I will remodel the coop back the it was and try a different method of gaining access to clean.
I agree, privacy when doing business is important to adults and chickens!
We recently made some alterations to the coop to make it easier to clean roost droppings, and now they won't lay in the nesting boxes. We changed from 1 long pole running length wise to 2 short poles running across the coop. We moved the nesting box closer to the entrance to the coop. The hens...
