Rooster art for non-profit fundraiser (photo taken by my 9 year old!)

My son Andre, 9 years old, took photos for a fundraiser for after school programs. Of course he took a picture of Otis, our Black Australorp rooster. :D These photos come in a mat, ready to frame and make a great Christmas gift for chicken lovers! On the back of the mat is an "about the artist"...

    The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

8 week old EOs that we hatched. I'm fairly sure by stance and comb on some of these whether I have cockerals or pullets, but a few I'm on the fence about. When should I expect saddle feathers? I have 10 total, but only a few wanted their pictures taken today. :)

    The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

How do you decide which cockerals to keep? My chicks are currently about 4 weeks old and I'm just starting to identify some of the roos in the bunch. I only have enough space for one or two additional roosters, so I'm going to have to get rid of some of these guys. But choosing the best...

Muscovy Duck - Egg Membrane Day 42

You were trying to help, and I bet you've learned a lot about the process, so I'd chalk it up to life experience! FWIW, when I have broody ducks the only interference I bother with is checking the nest once a week or so to candle eggs and remove any that are foul smelling or obviously not...

Muscovy Duck - Egg Membrane Day 42

Wow, what an ordeal! Here's my guess on what happened, given my Muscovies.... Mine get broody, sit on their nest often, and sleep there at night, for about a week before the official "setting" begins. I would think for sure that they spend enough time on the eggs to start the clock, but I...

At what age are you able to tell your cockerals from pullets? Mine are only a week old but I'm overly eager to know what I have!

    The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Thanks! Looks like we're ending up with 11 since the last 2 didn't make it out of their shells. I haven't taken them out of the incubator yet, but from peeking in the window it appears we have 2 chocolate, 3 blue, 1 cuckoo blue, and 5 black! I'll get pictures this afternoon :)

    The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Hi everyone! I have a dozen Orpington chicks that have hatched out in the incubator, from hatching eggs I purchased. They could be black, blue, chocolate, mauve and cuckoo of any of those colors. How can I tell what their colors will be from day olds? I'm excited to be entering the world of...

    Muscovy keepers share your pics!

I think that the two are often mistaken for each other, but a Lavender actually carries a lavender gene. While a "lilac" is a combination of blue and chocolate genes, and they can often be sort of 'calico' colored.

    Muscovy keepers share your pics!

Have to share a pic of my favorite juvenile hen that we have. She's a Lavender, and she's stunning! We have 3 lavender girls that we're keeping. I think I could have a whole flock of these and be happy. :D
