I also order from Rochester but am wanting to get some different laying/heritage breeds. I have found some at auction but there is a risk there. It would be nice to know some other places (possibly breeders) in alberta.
I bought a group of Sumatra cross chickens from a poultry auction here in Alberta. Wondering if these 3 were Roos or hens?
Also any idea what the "cross" might be?
I would do the same but there is no option of buying these breeds sexed. I will try ordering a larger number next spring. They say they have a 48% pullet rate in groups of 25+
Thank you
After everyone's help I figure I have 10 roosters out of my package or 12 chickens I ordered this year. Not such good luck. Next has to be mostly hens...right?;) :P
I order from a hatchery here in Alberta called Rochester. There aren't many options close to home for ordering chicks.
What is it you look for to differ sex in this breed?
Are these three beauties all Ameraucanas?
I ordered an unsexed mixed package from the local hatchery and am not 100% if these 3 are the same breed.
Also pullets or cockerels?
Chicken 1
Chicken 2
Chicken 3
All are 12 weeks old.
Yup 12 weeks this Tuesday. The one on the right in the second picture I am thinking is a Danish Brown Leghorn pullet. Same age if you wanted a comparison
I ordered a "heritage breed package" from a local hatchery and of course they come unsexed. Any idea what these 3 Australorps are?
They are 12 weeks old
Hoping for pullets as I am wanting to add to my flock of laying hens. I am thinking I didn't get so lucky though
