About every 2 or 3 weeks. it does get a bit silty in the bottom but as long as it's not disturbed the water itself stays clear and clean.
You are correct though, a small drinking bowl is better.
This device was great for my neighbor who looked after my hens while I was away on a couple of weeks...
..Oh and while I'm at it, here's my feeder that I knocked up cheaply and quickly with some plywood and glue.
Takes around half a sack of layers pellets (10kg) and keeps the 5 hens going for about 2 and a half weeks.
