Thank you, you replied while I was typing my last post but I do appreciate your input. I read your list of options to my wife and she was pretty quick to say no to option A. I was pretty quick to veto option B but then realized that the current setup might help with option C.
We do have a chick...
Thanks to both of you! While egg production is nice, my wife does view them as only a small step behind the dogs in the pecking order. We've become empty nesters since the girls came along and the 2 remaining hens keep up with our needs for now. The 2 we lost hadn't laid this year, being hybrids...
We started this chicken journey a little over 3 years ago. We hadn't planned to have more than a few and had planned to get one of those pre-fab coops that claims to be big enough for 8-10 chickens and found a spot in our tiny suburban back yard where it would fit. After some research we...
Just took an egg out of a nesting box and as I walked back to the house I realized that it felt large in my hand. Petunia, a 7 month old white Leghorn, is my smallest bird but she lays the largest eggs, usually 73-75 grams. This one just felt bigger so I broke out the scale.
At least she's consistent, she hasn't missed a day (night) since I wrote that first post and her eggs have gotten bigger, well into "jumbo" territory. Today's was 74.4 grams, yesterday was 74.6.
In my limited experience, different chickens have different habits. My Black Star takes a long time, sometimes as long as a couple hours but more often she'll go in for half an hour to an hour, come out for a few minutes and then go back in. The cycle usually repeats 2 or 3 times and doesn't...
I'll have to look up the numbers for the feed when I get home, I think it was the same as regular Layena. Treats are limited, a small handful (1-2 tablespoons) of sunflower seeds or corn & mealworm scratch to keep them busy while I'm cleaning the coop a few times a week is the main thing I give...
The coop and run are a little small, it was planned for 3 birds but we brought home 4. The coop itself is 4 feet by 3 3/4 feet, 15 sq ft plus 2 external nesting boxes. There is a waterer in there but no food (that may change now that it's getting colder). There is a single roost, about 43" long...
For the last couple weeks, we've found an egg in the poop tray before sunrise most mornings. It seems that one of out pullets has been dropping eggs from the roost in the dark. Everything I've read seems to indicate that egg-laying is a day-time activity, but I guess my chickens haven't read the...
One each, White Leghorn, RIR, Black Star and ISA Brown. In the above post, Nugget is the RIR, Penelope is the ISA Brown. My wife mentioned that she'd seen Nugget in a nesting box and found a small brown egg a little while later and that we also had a white egg.
They are all 5 1/2 to 6 months...
