Predator proofing run - bury hardware cloth or extend it out two feet?

I want to build picket fencing around my bird's run to dress it up a little. Right now I have chicken wire with a treated 2x6 top and bottom. I guess I could lay 24" fencing, heavier the better, on the ground and cover it lightly or just let the grass grow thru it and build my fence on top of it...

    First Dead Girl

People do it too... Sorry you lost one. I hate it when one dies, especially just up and dies. I feel like there was something I missed. I want to say "it's just a chicken" but I still fret over it a little. I've lost 5 to predation and I accidently sat the drinker on one twice brooding day...

    Comb Question

I sold a rooster yesterday to a woman who was concerned about his comb freezing. He does have a tall single comb but I didn't see it as an issue because we rarely have cold winters. I'm on the eastern side of the Blue Ridge Mountains at about 1000 feet elevation. But she got me thinking. What...

Better hope she doesn't ask for horses next year! That's a really nice coop.

    Shelless egg

Thanks. I haven't made grit available as I range them but I have a bag put back for new birds I'm brooding. I'll set it out and see if that changes anything. I don't as yet know which bird it is. That would make it a lot easier to measure success.

    Shelless egg

Once in a while I find a shelless egg in my laying boxes. The rest of the egg is fine up to the membrane, and then no shell. I feed a standard SS layer pellet and forage on free range, and offer oyster shell and scratch grains. It's either a Wyandotte or RR, about 18mo old. I was thinking it was...

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

No about chickens, per se but definately in the "dumb things" catagory... I have a friend that I share a garden with. He thought potatoes set fruit like tomatoes, and you picked them. He wasn't new to gardening, mind you. Just potatoes... : )

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I raised Bourbon Red turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner last year. I ended up with 2 toms and 2 hens. My wife's family was happy with the birds and appreciated the work that went into growing them, as well as all the other benefits. MY mother, however, wasn't participating in this...

    "Shackling" my rooster?

Good for you. And your hens.

    "Shackling" my rooster?

I've got the same trouble, but I pen my roosters until I need their services. I doubt hobbling him would keep him from trying to mount them. He'd probably still tear them up even if he wasn't able to complete the act.
