I am still unsure whether to keep him or not, I very carefully tried to introduce him to the muscovies under controlled circumstances, however the glint in their eyes made me think otherwise! If I don't keep him, I will make sure that whoever homes him is absolutely competent to ensure his care...
@Miss Lydia . I don't know how long its been this way unfortunately. I would say, just based on my knowledge, that he is between 5 and 7 weeks old.
I tried to massage while soaking. He seemed uncomfortable with me doing it, but maybe it is just a new feeling. You are right, although I will not...
Thank you all for your kinds words! I already feel so welcome here. I appreciate all the tags and recommendations - I have my afternoons reading sorted :)
@Miss Lydia . I gave him some more Vit B over the pea's this morning. I soaked his leg in some luke warm water with dissolved Epsom salts and attempted to see if there is a slipped tendon. He really started quacking and seemed in pain when I started fiddling. I did manage to wrap the leg in some...
@casportpony . The leg can be "manually" moved but up until a point and then he starts to quack, which to me indicates some sort of pain.
@Miss Lydia . I was able to purchase some vit. B complex this evening and gave him some over his evening peas. Thank you for the advice.
Hi there :).
New member here from Cape Town. Proud father of 8 rescue muscovy ducks and 3 rescue Mallard ducklings. Have been a ghost on this forum but was in desperate need of advice for a Mallard.
Thanks for having me here :thumbsup
@Miss Lydia. I did some research up on the slipped tendon. Based on what I have seen I believe this to be the case. I an unaware how long this poor thing has been suffering but will attempt the treatment as I have read up online (slipping the tendon back into place) however I fear it might be...
I will have to. The other two will most likely be released on a farm dam, I try to keep them wild so they are able to be released, just not a public waterway where they could be euthanized. I also have 8 Muscovies, love them to bits however I understand how they can be destructive. She never...
@Duckfarmer1 . Thank you for your reply. I will soak his leg, the pain meds made him horribly listless so I thought it best to stop them temporarily and see if it has any negative effects. Tonight I will try to wrap his knee and see if there is any improvement. He has just started quacking...
I will be sure to go to the shops this afternoon. He was a wild Mallard that was rescued at some point as a duckling. Here in South Africa Mallards are actually considered invasive so are euthanized unfortunately. I have my own 2 week olds that were also given to me as rescue ducklings however...
@Miss Lydia . Thank you for the advice. I will be sure to give him some scrambled egg tomorrow instead of boiled egg. He was seen by an exotic vet - the lady that asked me to take him wasn't too forthcoming on details, just that he needs painkillers. I suspected that it might be a niacin...
@DuckDuckGooseMum Thank you for your reply. In what way would the coconut oil help? Every morning he shares a bit of hard boiled egg with the other two.
Hi all!
I am new here to post ( I have been a ghost on this page and for many years and have followed advice from all the forums. This time, however, I have a specific problem if I could please be advised.
I was recently given a Mallard Duck ( roughly 6 weeks old) to rehabilitate. When it...
