Do I need to have a separate login for purchasing the Calendar with the checkout software? The login for the checkout did not accept my email and password that I currently use for accessing the backyardchickens.com website. That seemed a little strange, however, since I login to...
We have six chickens, live in Texas where it is now hot. We've had them since chicks going on a year ago now. A couple of them did not lay eggs for several weeks when they got broody and wanted to sit on the other's eggs. After awhile they resumed egg laying as before. A tip regarding shavings...
Our first venture into backyard chickens for eggs is with 2 yellow Buff Orpingtons and 2 Barred Rocks week old chicks. A month later we supplemented with 2 Blue Australorps and an Easter Egger week old chicks. We spent time handling them when they were chicks and getting them use to our dogs...
Think carefully about the number of nesting boxes. We have 7 hens, and 3 nesting boxes. The nesting boxes all get used every day, and reduce the amount of squabbling that can occur when multiple hens want (need) to lay.
Great suggestions sniper338 - thanks for the ideas! Will have time this coming week to do both of those. My wife wants to build another roost outside of the coop also somewhere. When it is raining (in the forecast this coming weekend) the roost in the run as you suggested would be a good idea...
Our chicken coop is a 4x6 coop. You can see it at https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/our-chicken-coop-run-construction-progress.1541236/page-4#post-26355611
We figured that 7 chickens was about right for that size. We live in N. Texas and have a couple Barred Rock chickens, a couple Buff...
With the cold weather, we attached some 3 mil plastic in the run area below the coop.
Even though it is in the low 20's this afternoon (right now), they are all very active! We let them free range outside the run today. They normally come back in when we call and shake some corn in a bucket, but...
This is our first winter with chickens, they were chicks we purchased at the feed store this past July and August. 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Barred Rock, 2 Blue Australorp and an Easter Egger. We have a non insulated coop (see my Coop Story here on backyardchickens.com) which has a well ventilated...
I had some time the last couple weeks to put together a video of how we made our chicken coop at our family website on this page: http://suttonsonline.com/index.php?pg=rces
Scroll down on the page and you'll see the video there. Hopefully it will help people that are considering raising...
Update on how the coop and run are working. We have 7 chickens now that are between 4-5 months old now. They weathered the heat here in N. Texas well! The coop windows stayed open during the summer, with a tarp on the west side to block the harsh sun in the evening. That worked great, keeping...
Update on coop: Most everything is done now except some artistic touches, like the name of the coop and some lettering on the nesting box. We have yet to get the gutters installed with the rain barrel and watering system, that will probably be done in the next couple weeks. We also have to build...
Is it possible to show a picture of the sides and other end of the coop? Seeing those perspectives might help affirm or even improve on the suggestions given so far. The idea to raise the lower end of the roof seems to have a better chance of minimizing humidity in the coop while offering more...
